Hughie Fury’s trainer pleased with his progress

hughie53By Scott Gilfoid: Peter Fury, the trainer and father of unbeaten British heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (12-0, 7 KO’s), feels that the 6’6″ fighter is moving along nicely with the direction his still young career is going in. The 19-year-old Hughie fought 12 times in 2013, albeit against weak 3rd tier opposition for the most part.

Peter is trying to develop Hughie into a future world champion, and he wants to push him quickly with a lot of fights for him to learn from. Unlike heavyweights like Anthony Joshua, Hughie hasn’t had much of an amateur, so he’s getting on the job training if you will.

Peter said to Hennessy Sports “It’s worked exactly to plan giving him as many fights as possible in this space of time – it’s done him nothing but good. He’s now fighting clever, while before he felt like mixing it up and taking opponents out, he’s now pacing himself and he’s trying different things in there.

Mike Perez faces Carlos Takam on Jan. 18th

perez675By Eric Thomas: On January 18th, unbeaten #5 WBC, #10 WBO, heavyweight contender Mike Perez (20-0, 12 KO’s) will be fighting for the first time since his tragic bout against Magomed Abdusalamov when he faces Carlos Takam (28-1, 22 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute fight at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Perez, 28, defeated Abdusalamov in a grueling 10 round fight last November in which Abdusalamov suffered a blood clot on his brain had to be rushed to surgery to have it removed. He’s still hospitalized from the affects of the blood clot and a subsequent stroke he suffered. Although Perez got the victory, he took a lot of heavy head shots from Abdusalamov, and hopefully he’s still the same fighter he was before. That was a very advanced opponent for someone with as little pro experience as the 6’0″ Perez.

By Allen Hmiel: Boxing is a great sport and the sport where an upset can occur in any fight off of one big perfectly landed punch. Every fighter entering a boxing ring has a chance to win. One perfectly thrown hard shot right on the button KO’s any opponent at any given moment. Thinking back through the years what is the biggest boxing upset by a KO ever?

Ryan Coyne talks about his career, return to the ring on Saturday and title fights falling through

coyne4(Photo credit: Main Events) By Ian Aldous: This Saturday December 14th, Ryan Coyne (21-1) makes his comeback against Lionell Thompson (14-2) on an NBC Sports Network ‘Fight Night’ card in the co-feature bout. After suffering the first defeat of his career and finally getting over his promotional problems, it’s a chance to reinvent himself on Network TV. Last weekend I spoke with Ryan seven days away from the fight following his final sparring session.

With spots on network television boxing cards at a premium, the opportunity to fight on the show this Saturday and showcase himself to casual and hardcore fans alike was something that a fighter like Ryan grabbed with both hands. “I was supposed to have a fight in September and I got injured while I was over in Germany in a training camp with Marco Huck. I re-aggravated an old hand injury after what’s been a tough year with issues in and out of the ring. So I took a little time away from boxing to regroup and welcome the birth of my first son in October. After that I saw that Main Events is doing great, great things with NBC Sports, really putting together fantastic cards in great venues and they’re doing the show on December 14th in Atlantic City.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Carlos Molina possible for Showtime PPV on March 8th

canelo95By Dan Ambrose: Rather than step up and face WBA 154 lb. champion Erislandy Lara next, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) vs. IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KO’s) on pay-per-view on March 8th. According to Steve Kim, this would be Canelo’s option of Miguel Cotto decides to fight WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez instead of facing him.

There still isn’t any word whether Cotto will accept the $10 million+ offer made by Golden Boy Promotions for him to face the red-haired Canelo next. But there is talk that Cotto will face the 38-year-old Sergio next because the fight gives him a little more money, and an opportunity to fight for a 4th division world title. Cotto has already captured division titles at 140, 147 and 154.
