Lucas Matthysse vs. Lamont Peterson: A must see!

matthysse3433By Sotoman: This weekend boxing fans across the globe will be treated to a great fight between light welterweights Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ. This fight will bring boxing fans from both spectrum of the sport together, those who love the action fighters and those fans who enjoy the sweet science.

Despite the fact that both fighters enjoy trading shots and coming forward, Matthysse and Peterson can also box as proven in previous fights. Both fighters are looking to challenge or obtain a fight with Danny Garcia later this year with a win.

This win will not come easy for any of them. Matthysse and Peterson will both come in strong and with their sights set on winning. Peterson’s last fight against Kendall Holt was impressive in the sense that Peterson was relentless in coming forward, but an argument could be made that Holt was drained in weight.

Would Gonzalez have lost to Burns with open scoring that Canelo-Trout had?

gonzalez54By Dan Ambrose: In watching last Saturday’s fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns and Jose Gonzalez, it was pretty sad to see the Puerto Rican fighter Gonzalez quitting on his stool after the 9th round with a sizable 3-round lead on all of the scorecards.

Later after the fight, Gonzalez that he would have never quit had he known that he was ahead that much in the fight. Gonzalez thought the fight was extremely close, and that was why he chose to quit.

Having seen how WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez benefited greatly with the open scoring for his recent win over WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout last month in San Antonio, Texas, I wonder if Gonzalez would have quit on his stool if he had known how much of a lead he had after 8 rounds.

Hearn: Froch would be at a disadvantage against Hopkins

froch9By Scott Gilfoid: Eddie Hearn, the promoter for IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch, ruled out a fight between Froch and 48-year-old IBF light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins in the near future, saying that Hopkins was too big for Froch, even though there’s only 7 pounds that separates the two fighters.

Hearn said to Sky Sports “It’s flattering [that Hopkins wants to fight Froch]…I don’t think Carl needs to fight at a catchweight…Carl walks around just above 12 stone and he’d be at a big disadvantage.”

Oh man, Hearn won’t even put Froch in with a fighter that is nearly 50-years-old in Hopkins. That is pretty sad. It just gives the appearance that Hearn is protecting Froch from what could be a very, very tough fight for him.

Kessler talking retirement if he loses to Froch

kessler2By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) is talking about ending his boxing career if he gets beat by IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) in their rematch in two weeks at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

I don’t know why Kessler would eve talk retirement because the chances are he’s going to win and look sensational in doing so. Is there a possibility he’ll lose? Yeah, but I only see him losing if he gets jobbed. After all, he is fighting Froch in his home country of the UK, and not in a neutral venue.

Under those circumstances, there’s a very real chance that Kessler could lose the fight even if he puts in a master class performance. When you’re fighting in someone else’s hometown or in this case home country, getting shafted kind of goes with the territory.

Cotto a better match-up for Canelo than Mayweather

cotto3434By Dan Ambrose: WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman feels that it’s still not time for WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to step inside the ring with the faster, more experience and much more talented Floyd Mayweather Jr. yet.

Sulaiman wants Canelo to wait before he takes the fight with Mayweather. He prefers that Canelo fight Miguel Cotto next to pick up more fame and experience from that fight before he looks to tackle someone like Mayweather.

Sulaiman said to ESPN Deportes “It [Cotto] would be the best for Cinnamon [Canelo]. Cotto is a very dangerous boxer, he at the key point of his career where he needs to show that he can continue at the world level. It would be the best fight of the two.

Hearn says Broner can’t fight Burns because he’s busy

broner4534By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn is starting early with the excuses for why he won’t be trying to match Burns with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner for September, saying that Broner is busy with a fighting WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi.

That has got to be the worst excuse for dodging an opponent I’ve ever seen because Broner is fighting Malignaggi next month on June 22nd, and Burns doesn’t have a fight until likely late September.

Charr using Haye as a stepping stone to get to Vitali

charr2By Scott Gilfoid: It’s not personal with #8 WBC Manuel Charr (23-1, 13 KO’s). He’s using the rusty and small former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) as a stepping stone to get another shot at WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko next year.

Charr was beaten last September by Vitali after he suffered a cut that caused the fight to be stopped early. Charr’s plan for that fight was to take the aging 41-year-old Vitali deep and then drown him in the later rounds when Vitali fades.

Charr and Haye fight next month on June 29th at the Manchester Arena in the UK. While Haye thinks Charr is slow and easy to hit, Charr sees Haye as someone that is just too light in weight to do anything to him.

Ricky Burns Celtic Warrior

burns534By Hugh Janus: Congratulations to Ricky Burns for an outstanding performance in defence of his World Title. A true Celtic warrior, he came through fire for the most decisive win of his career against an evidently more talented boxer. His World Champion credentials are beyond question.

Gonzalez showed pure class from the first bell, dominating the first half of the fight with ease. Early signs suggested the fight would end in a very lop sided decision if Burns could even make it that far. I had certainly written him off going into the 7th.

However, as Burns beautifully illustrated on Saturday night, winning and successfully defending a title strap does not always mean being the most talented boxer in the fight. There are many other qualities that make a champion.

Three June knockouts to anticipate

golovkin322by Bob Smith: In scanning the boxing matches coming up next month, I will venture to make predictions of three KO victories. Will I be right? Only time will tell. For the (very recent) record, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez did better than I anticipated he would, though I had him losing a narrow decision; I also thought that Guerrero would have some more success in pressuring Floyd, though I did anticipate Floyd Mayweather Jr would win by unanimous decision.

The good news is that Gennady Golovkin should dismiss the highly talkative and disrespectful but very world class and skilled Matthew Macklin within roughly 8 rounds. I thought Macklin did very well against Sergio Martinez, but I don’t see him being able to cope effectively with the power and pressure tactics of Golovkin. I think that Martin Murray and his excellent defense would pose more problems for Golovkin though I think Golovkin would defeat Murray in a decision.
