Canelo: I definitely rebounded from the Mayweather fight

canelo14By Chris Williams: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) feels that his 10th round TKO win over Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night was redemption for him from his humiliating defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

For Canelo, he sees himself as having proven that he’s learned from the loss to Mayweather, and that he’s improved his game. However, I’m really not so sure that a fighter as limited and as poor as Angulo is someone good enough for Canelo to make that kind of a statement about himself.

Canelo weighed 174 lbs for Angulo fight last night

canelo093(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: In what makes a strong case that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) should be fighting at middleweight or better yet super middleweight, Canelo reportedly stepped inside the ring last Saturday night at 174 lbs for his bout against Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In contrast, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin recently weighed 170 lbs for one of his title defenses at middleweight. In other words, Canelo out-weighed even a middleweight champion like Golovkin. What does that tell you? It tells me that Canelo is way too heavy to be fighting in the junior middleweight division. He reminds me a lot of how former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. would drain down a massive amount of weight to fight smaller middleweights and have a huge weight advantage over them come fight time.

Why Angulo vs. Canelo had a lot to with Mayweather and Lara

Canelo Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Hector Gonzalez: I wrote an article last week saying that Canelo was going to beat Angulo. I got a lot of heat for that article. Many fans were predicting that Angulo was going to win. For a moment I was puzzled as to why people were picking Angulo to win, I know that there is an emotional factor involved when rooting for a fighter and I do feel that Angulo is an easy guy to like, but based on skill I didn’t quite understand why people were saying that Angulo would win so boldly.

After some thought I realize that the reason why so many people were picking Angulo to win doesn’t have much to do with Angulo or Canelo as much as it has to do with Erislandy Lara and Floyd Maymayweather. The saying in boxing today is that “All roads lead to Mayweather”, in this case as subtle as it maybe this fight was really about Mayweather’s trajectory in boxing.

Lara confronts Canelo at post-fight press conference, and is brushed off

canelo74By Chris Williams: WBA interim junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara got up on stage last night at the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – Alfredo Angulo post-fight press conference, and called Canelo out out in front of a large audience of media members. Instead of Canelo giving Lara hope for a future fight now that he’s had his easy tune-up fight against Angulo, Canelo told Lara that he has to wait for a fight a fight. Before saying that, Canelo questioned what fans are interested in seeing him fight Lara.

Here’s how the conversation played out:

Mayweather Sr. wonders why Angulo wasn’t hitting Canelo hard

Canelo Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: Sounding very suspicious, Floyd Mayweather Sr. questioned after tonight’s fight between Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) why Angulo wasn’t trying to hit Canelo with full power on his shots like he’d one in the past in his fights. From Mayweather Sr’s perspective, Angulo wasn’t trying to hit Canelo hard at all in their fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he wonders why he didn’t.

Canelo won the fight by a 10th round stoppage, and dominated every round. But what was missing was Angulo’s own power. He always punches much harder than what he showed tonight, and suddenly his power disappeared from his last fight in June of last year to this one.

Canelo stops Angulo in disappointing fight

LAS VEGAS (March 8, 2014) – Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez scored a controversial 10th round technical knockout victory over Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo in front of 14,610 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in the main event of Saturday’s “TOE TO TOE: CANELO vs. ANGULO” on SHOWTIME PPV.

Canelo (43-1-1, 31 KOs) landed a vicious left uppercut that rocked “El Perro’s” head back at 0:47 of the 10th round. Sensing Angulo was taking too much punishment, referee Tony Weeks stepped in and halted the exciting battle.

Angulo: I wanted to keep fighting [against Canelo]

Canelo Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: A game Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) put in a valiant effort tonight in his fight against the bigger Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s), but the referee Tony Weeks took it out of Angulo’s hands by stopping the fight in the 10th round to give the red-haired Canelo the victory at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It didn’t matter that Angulo was still fighting back hard, Weeks decided that he’d seen enough of the mostly one-sided fight. Canelo was ahead on the judges scorecards by the scores of 89-82, 88-83 and 89-82 at the time of the stoppage.

Angulo said after the fight “It was 20 weeks of training, it’s disappointing. I wanted to keep fighting.”

Canelo destroys Angulo; Santa Cruz dominates Mijares

Canelo Alvarez v Alfredo Angulo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Jim Dower: In a terrible mismatch, former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KO’s) stopped Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KO’s) in the 10th round on Saturday night at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Referee Tony Weeks halted the fight early in the 10th round after Angulo took some brutal shots to the head.

Angulo was cut over both eyes with bad swelling at the time the fight was halted. As good Angulo was in some of his past fights, he looked weight drained and weak tonight. In contrast, Canelo was powerful both hands and he wasn’t tiring. I’d never sen Angulo look so weak before. There was nothing in his arsenal and you have to wonder if he lost too much weight in too quick of a time.

Canelo makes 168 lb re-hydration limit at today’s weigh-in

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez successfully made weight today in his secondary weigh-in for his fight tonight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s), but Golden Boy Promotions isn’t saying how much Canelo weighed. Canelo had to make the agreed upon re-hydration limit of 168 lbs or else he’d have had to fork over some more green stuff to Angulo. Canelo already gave Angulo $100,000 of his purse for asking that the weight limit be raise from 154 to 155 to make it easier for himself to make weight.

Schaefer: Canelo could have made weight for Angulo fight if a title were up for grabs

02 Canelo and Angulo IMG_1618(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer explained away his fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s inability to make weight for his fight tonight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) by saying that Canelo could have made the 154 lb limit had a title belt been on the line. To Schaefer, Canelo would have made the effort to get down to the junior middleweight limit if he had a reason to. Canelo now has to make the 168 lb re-hydration limit for today otherwise he’ll need to give Angulo a little more money. Canelo gave Angulo $100,000 yesterday for having the weight moved up from 154 to 155.

If Canelo can’t make 168, then one would guess that Angulo will get another chunk of change to make it worth his while to be facing a guy heavier than him. Canelo rehydrated to 172 for his junior middleweight fight last year against Austin Trout, so that gives you an idea of how heavy he can bulk up to after he hydrates following a weigh-in.
