Kessler destroys Perdomo, Frenkel stops Hubert – Boxing Results

kessler5434245By Erik Schmidt: In a night of huge mismatches in Denmark, World Boxing Association super middleweight championship Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KO’s) easily stopped Gusmyr Perdomo (16-3, 10 KO’s) in the 4th round at the MCH Messecenter Herning, in Herning, Denmark. Kessler dominated the slower Perdomo with jabs in the first three rounds, hitting him repeatedly with piston-like jabs over and over again to the head while Perdomo tried to get near Kessler. In the 3rd round, Kessler knocked the badly outclassed Perdomo down with a chopping right hand to the back of the head.

Frenkel Destroys Turgonyi

By Erik Schmidt: Undefeated cruiserweight prospect Alexander Frenkel (17-0, 13 KOs) was too much for Hungarian Balint Turgonyi (9-1, 3 KOs) in the 7th round tonight at the Jako arena, in Bamberg, Germany. Frenkel, 23, landed a hard left to Turgonyi’s midsection in the 7th round and then unloaded on him with a storm of punches, prompting for the referee to step in and save Turgonyi from having to take any more additional punishment.

Frenkel Destroys Phelps

frenkel464434.jpgBy Michael Liberman: Undefeated cruiserweight prospect Alexander Frenkel (15-0, 11 KOs) destroyed American Cory Phelps (12-4-1, 7 KOs) in 1st round TKO of a scheduled 10-round bout to win the vacant IBF Youth cruiserweight title on Saturday night at the Oberfrankenhalle, Bayreuth, in Bayern, Germany. Going into the fight, there were some people (mostly Americans) who felt that Phelps, 24, had a good chance of defeating Frenkel. However, that notion was pretty much dispelled in the first minute of the fight when Frenkel unleashed a wicked right hand that dropped Phelps as if he’d been shot with a shotgun. Previous to that, Frenkel had done little, mostly stalking Phelps and pawing with his jab.

Phelps was beginning to look a little confident, that is, until Frenkel nailed him with a big right hand. After getting hit, Phelps made it to his feet, listing from back and forth like he was on a ship, and receiving a standing eight count by the referee. Instead of going right after Phelps, upon the action being restarted, Frenkel calmly stalked him around the ring, waiting for the perfect time to land another shot.

Boxing Results: Huck and Frenkel victorious; Gamboa Wins

Yuriorkis Gamboa beat Darling Jimenez to win the vacant WBC international super featherweight championship. “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” dominated most of the fight but was down in the fourth when Jimenez caught him with a left. ARENA-CEO Ahmet Öner: “Gamboa is a complete fighter but tonight I was not happy with his performance. He was a little bit too arrogant and gave me a hard time. You must not forget that it was only his 10th pro-fight though. He has got to improve his defence but he will definitely be world champion one day. After all I am glad that he had to go the distance. That was an important experience for him.”

Frenkel vs. Phelps

frenkal33331.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: Unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Alexander Frenkel (14-0, 10 KOs) faces perhaps his toughest challenge of his short career when he meets up with American Cory Phelps (12-3-1, 7 KOs) on Saturday night at the Oberfrankenhalle, Bayreuth, in Bayern, Germany. Frenkel, 23, will be fighting for the vacant IBF Youth cruiserweight title. Frenkel is coming off an impressive 5th round stoppage over American Arthur Williams in his last bout in February. In that fight, Williams was totally dominated and dropped twice before the referee stopped the one-sided bout in the 5th.

At 23, Frenkel, originally from Ukraine and now living and fighting out of Germany, is one of the top cruiserweight prospects in the world, though he has still yet to fight any top level opposition thus far in his career. In selecting Phelps, Frenkel’s management is choosing a tough opponent, one who many felt beat Bobby Gunn in their recent 6-round draw in March. Even though his record isn’t all that impressive with his three losses, Phelps is much better than his record indicates. He has excellent power and moves well around the ring. That is precisely the type of fighter that may turn out to be the Achilles hill for Frenkel, who despite his enormous power in either hand, he’s somewhat stationary, and moves rather poorly for a top level fighter.

Frenkel Stops Williams

frenkal3333.jpgBy Chris Thomas: Unbeaten cruiserweight prospect Alexander Frenkel (14-0, 10 KOs) stopped former Interntioanl Boxing Federation cruiserweight champion Arthur “King” Williams (43-15-1, 30 KOs) tonight, stopping him in the 5th round of a scheduled eight-round bout at the Nuernberg Arena, in Nuremberg, Bayern, Germany. Fighting on the undercard of Nikolay Valuev vs. Sergei Lyakhovich WBA title eliminator, Frenkel, 22, had too much youth and power for the former champion Williams, 43, knocking him down twice in the bout, first in the second round and then another time in the 5th, causing referee Ernst Salzgeber to stop the fight at 2:02 of the 5th round.

In the 1st round, Frenkel came out looking really stiff, showing no head movement and standing perfectly straight up. However, he had nothing to worry about because Williams did little, aside from throwing an occasional pawing jab. I expected more from a former champion like Williams, but at 43 years-old, he appears to have very little left of his once impressive boxing skills.
