alexeev22.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: Undefeated cruiserweight contender Alexander Alexeev (16-0, 15 KOs) destroyed journeyman Rob Calloway (70-8-2, 56 KOs) in a 3rd round TKO on Saturday night to hold retain his WBO Inter-Continental cruiserweight title at the Color Line Arena, Altona, in Hamburg, Germany. Alexeev, 27, ranked #2 in the WBO, dropped Calloway with a flurry of shots early in the 3rd round. Soon after he got up, Calloway was finished off three straight left hands from Alexeev, knocking the American to the canvas for a second time in the round. Calloway, badly hurt, groggily got to his knees, but referee Luis Pabon called a halt to the fight at 2:34 of the third round.

Calloway, 39, who’s currently ranked #15 in the IBF. WBC and WBO, was thought to have been someone that could give Alexeev some competition. However, the fight was largely one-sided from the very start, as stalked Calloway around the ring, hitting him with jabs to the midsection, straight left hands to the head and short right hooks. Calloway, normally a fighter with excellent offensive skills, found it almost impossible to any of his shots against Alexeev. When he would try to come forward to land, Alexeev would back away and tag him with short right hooks and straight left hands while retreating.

Alexeev vs. Calloway on Saturday

aleev3335.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: On Saturday night, we may be seeing the best cruiserweight in all of boxing when undefeated Alexander Alexeev (15-0, 14 KOs) defends his WBO Inter-Continental cruiserweight title against veteran Rob Calloway (70-7, 56 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout at the Color Line Arena, Altona, in Hamburg, Germany. Alexeev, a former 2005 amateur World champion and who participated in the 2004 Olympics for Russia, has moved up at light speed since turning professional in 2006. Originally, Alexeev came from Uzbekistan, but moved to Germany in 2006 where he trains with legendary German trainer Fritz Sdunek, the original professional trainers for Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.

Alexeev, ranked #2 in the WBO, #12 in the IBF, #9 in the WBA and #10 in the WBC, is facing his best opponent to date in the 39 year-old Calloway, a former heavyweight who has faced a number of quality fighters in his day such as Ruslan Chagaev, Hasim Rahman and Audley Harrison. Always undersized for a heavyweight, Calloway finally moved to the heavyweight division in 2007, where he’s won nine out of his last ten fights with one fight ending in a draw.

Alexeev vs. Azille This Saturday

aleev33353535.jpgBy Erik Schmidt: Undefeated cruiserweight contender Alexander Alexeev (14-0, 13 KOs) takes on former cruiserweight title challenger Louis Azille (19-5-2, 15 KOs) in a 10-round bout on Saturday, in Burg-Waechter Castello, Dusseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Alexeev, 27, a former amateur star from the former Soviet Union, who came in 2nd in the 2003 World championship and 2nd in the 2004 Athen’s Olympics losing narrowly on both occasions to Odlanier Solis, and then winning the 2005 World Championships.

Alexeev now lives and trains in Hamburg, Germany, and is trained by Fritz Sdunek, the former trainer for Wladimir Klitschko. Ranked #4 in the WBO, #9 in the WBA, #13 in the WBC, and #14 in the IBF, Alexeev has moved up quickly despite still being at the early stages of his career. This is, no doubt, because of how impressive Alexeev has looked in his fights, stopping 13 of his 14 opponents inside the distance. His opposition thus far has been pretty soft, with his best win coming recently with a 3rd round stoppage of veteran Talmadge Griffis February 2008.
