Mayweather Jr. – The Oh has to Go!

floyd9023There is a law among boxing writers. Write about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and your article automatically draws more attention. He is undoubtedly the #1 pound-for-pound champ and the face of boxing. So it’s no surprise that what he does, other boxers try to duplicate. Both inside and outside the ring.

But by far his biggest influence on current boxers is the emphasis he puts on his undefeated status. This might sound silly because obviously who wants to lose? But it is a fact that the greats (Ali, Leonard, Robinson, Chavez, Tyson, De La Hoya to name a few) all took losses. That didn’t make them un-great. Can we really rank Ricardo Lopez, Joe Calzaghe, or Teri Marsh among them for their undefeated records? I’ll let you be the judge.

Why don’t more boxers act like Mayweather? Part I

He is, after all, the PPV King and that means tons of cash. Considering fights like Mayweather vs De La Hoya and Mayweather vs Guerrero, which many called boring, how has Mayweather become the PPV King?

Part of it is that he really is the best boxer right now. But there are plenty of highly talented boxers who don’t make lots of money. Guillermo Rigondeaux (12-0) recently defeated HBO star Nonito Donaire. Ironically, HBO has said it’s not interested in airing Rigondeaux’s next fight.

Sergio Martinez’s Dilemma

martinez2233By John Gibson: Since his KO of Paul Williams in 2010, current WBC Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-2-2) has had an illustrious career. But as of late, Martinez appears to be getting old.

While he schooled Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1) in September 2012, he took big punishment in the last round, suffering a knee injury, which required surgery. Then in April, he struggled to beat Martin Murray (25-1-1) with many believing Murray won. This fight too required Martinez to get knee surgery.
