Canelo-Lara: Judging so important for tonight

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Gav Duthie: The last thing boxing needs tonight is another controversial decision. Apart from the boxers themselves the three most important people in a fight like this are the judges. When Saul Alvarez 43-1-1 (31) fights Erislandy Lara 19-1-2 (12) it is highly likely that they will be needed. We would all like to think that the best fighter will win the fight but history tells us this is not often the case.

Unfortunately in the murky world of boxing a fighters marketability often dictates who wins a close decision. The judges for the fight this evening are seasoned veterans Dave Moretti, Jerry Roth and Levi Martinez. These men have judged over 2000 fights between them and I am extremely hopeful that they will ensure the best man will win.

The mixed fortunes of Daniel Jacobs and Dimitry Pirog

jacobs5By Gav Duthie: It is somewhat of a fairytale that Daniel Jacobs 27-1 (24) fights for the WBA world title on August 9th 2014. His last title challenge ended in disaster when in 2010 he was put flat on his back in the 5th round as the referee waved away the contest.

After two low-key winning comeback fights he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer.

His conqueror back in July 2010 on the undercard of Juan Manuel Marquez v Juan Diaz 2 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas was Russian middleweight Dimitry Pirog 20-0 (16). Despite being behind on the cards Pirog delivered a perfectly timed right hand to the head of Jacobs handing him the WBO middleweight championship.

Preview: American prospects for 2015

By Gav Duthie: The United States is not the boxing powerhouse it once was. For big events Las Vegas will always be the mecca of fighting but where are the next American boxing superstars? Floyd Mayweather Jr is close to retirement, Andre Ward rarely fights and Andre Dirrell has disappeared completely.

Heavyweight action in July/August

fury664By Gav Duthie: Over the course of the next two months boxing fans will get a chance to see no less than 9 hopefuls in action as we prepare for a new era post heavyweight domination of the Klitschko’s. As individuals I have been a big fan of the Ukrainian brothers. They’ve got class, dignity, speak 4 languages and they never trash talk.

It’s not their fault they are better than everyone else. That being said with Vitaly now retired and Wladimir soon to follow (I predict he will go if he wins the WBC) the heavyweight division will take a new shape and create much more interest with dozens of fighters looking to grab a title.

Gamboa wants his management to keep him active

gamboa5444By Gav Duthie: Yuriorkis Gamboa 23-1 (16) immediately took to twitter in the aftermath of his first professional defeat to Terrence Crawford 24-0 (17) to implore his management team to keep him active.

Gamboa said on his twitter, “All I want to do is box. That is it. I am a boxer. A Cuban boxer. So if you are in charge please listen. Just let me box. Please.”

Gamboa is undoubtedly feeling quite low just now. Despite having to sell his Olympic Flyweight gold medal to support his family and having to defect from his native Cuba to become a pro boxer he has not been able to fully realise his dream.

Anyone for Kell Brook v Dan Ion? Me neither

brook5By Gav Duthie: Surely lightning isn’t going to strike for about the 50th time for Special’ Kell Brook 32-0 (22) as it looks increasingly likely that once again he is going to miss out on a big fight for the IBF Welterweight title. I reckon Brook could probably enter the Guinness book of records for longest time as mandatory challenger, now around the 2 year mark.

Its difficult to pin down whats actually happening with this fight. A few days ago we were told by Porter Snr that Shawn Brook hadn’t signed his part of the contract. Now it seems to be the other way round that Porter is stalling.

Lomachenko should take a step back from world level

lomachenko44444By Gav Duthie: I apologize in advance for being the voice of boredom but I think Vasyl Lomachenko 2-1 (1) should relinquish his recently acquired WBO Featherweight title and take a short break from fighting at the top level. There is no doubt Saturday night was an amazing achievement from the Ukranian amateur sensation who equaled Thai boxer Saensak Muangsurin’s record of winning a world title after only 3 fights. However, after doing a bit of research into Muangsurin and some of the other early achievers very few of them go on to have really successful careers.

That combined with the fact that Loma’s last two fight have went to a split decision I fear that Lomachenko’s career could be over before it begins. Even though his win was well deserved I felt there were a lot of weaknesses in his game that could be rectified with some more professional experience. He seems to struggle on the back foot when under pressure, he can be countered quite easily, his arms are often low without the speed to justify this.

Gavin to take on Bundu for the European title

gavin577By Gav Duthie: Frankie Gavin 19-0 (12) will challenge Leonard Bundu 30-0-2 (11) for his European title on August 1st 2014. This is a real crossroads fight with much more than just the European gong at stake. Both fighters are ranked highly with some of the boxing organizations and whoever wins would have a legitimate claim for a world title shot.

Mayweather should fight Thurman, Porter or Brook before he retires

floyd98674By Gav Duthie: For the last few years we’ve always known that like clockwork Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0 (26) will fight on the first Saturday in May and the second Saturday in September. This seems to have worked relatively well for him in the past but this time that September date means he is running out of potential opponents for his next showdown.

There have been so many summer blockbusters in and around his divisions most opponents wouldn’t be available for September. When I look through the list of candidates the only fight that seems workable and worthwhile is Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman 23-0 (21). This got me thinking that if Mayweather isn’t going to cement his legacy by beating Manny Pacquiao then he should look to the superstars of the future.

Carl Froch: The most limited champion in the current era?

froch#11By Gav Duthie: I keep waiting for it and it never happens. Every opponent Carl Froch 33-2 (24) faces, I’m confident they are going to expose him. I think to myself he’s too slow, has poor footwork, his jab is often short, you could sip a cup of coffee, boil an egg and still have time to avoid most of his right hands, he also gets hit hard and often in almost every contest.

His two fights against George ‘Saint’ Groves 19-2 (15) reminded me on last nights game of thrones (spoiler alert) contest between The Red Viper and The Mountain. The Viper is faster, classier, has better movement and more variety. The Mountain plods forward, one dimensionally, missing badly and getting countered. Just when you think the Vipers in control, he lets his guard down and its over, another kill for The Mountain.
