What might a WBSS Heavyweight tournament look like?

Image: What might a WBSS Heavyweight tournament look like?

By Gav Duthie: The World boxing super series has been a great success far. Oleksandr Usyk landed on top in the first battle at cruiserweight, George Groves and Callum Smith will contest 168lb final and another two divisions, lightweight and bantamweight have been confirmed with a host of stars in each to commence later in the year. What would a heavyweight tournament look like though. Boxing’s flagship division is having a bit of trouble getting the stars together namely Joshua and Wilder and the idea of the WBSS is that it brings the best together with one ultimate goal to find the best fighter in the division. In reality I think there is to much conflict and money at heavyweight for the best to agree but lets live in a fantasy world and see how this might turn out if it ever happened.

6 things we learned last Saturday night

Image: 6 things we learned last Saturday night

By Gav Duthie: Some weekends I wait in anticipation for the next big fight, scrolling the news for fights that took place between over the hill Mexicans, regional titles, small hall shows, and some weekends have too much action to watch all in one night. Last weekend was one of those. The UK had boxing shows on Sky and Channel 5 whilst later in the evening across the pond the Stats had shows on Showtime and HBO. All events were significant, even the undercards so rather than write about them individually we will look at 6 things that we learned from the boxing last Saturday.

Keith Thurman just telling it like it is

Image: Keith Thurman just telling it like it is

By Gav Duthie: Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman 28-0 (22) is getting quite a tough time from all angles right now. Errol Spence is calling him out on his reluctance to fight him with the fans and media buying into the same theory. Thurman has pretty much ruled out fighting Spence in 2018. Understandably the fans always want the big fights yesterday, but this isn’t always possible.

A rivalry to match the 1980s?

Image: A rivalry to match the 1980s?

By Gav Duthie: Not many would argue that one of the greatest eras in boxing took place in the 1980s between welterweight-middleweight involving American trio Sugar Ray Leonard 36-3-1 (25), Marvin Hagler 62-3-2 (52) and Tommy Hearns 61-5-1 (48). As well as these three standout stars there was Roberto Duran, Wilfried Benitez, John Mugabi and many more in the mix.

The cruiserweight division is the best it has ever been but do these champions have the ability to dominate the division above, let’s look at the evidence and the future.

Delusional Danny Garcia

By Gav Duthie: The number 1 P4P fighter in his own mind Danny ‘Delusional’ Garcia 33-1 (19) has been in full ego form in the last week throwing a barrage of compliments his own way stronger than his left hooks. Not only does he still feel undefeated (as the Keith Thurman loss is only a defeat on paper) but he doesn’t yet consider #1 P4P star Terrence Crawford worthy of fighting him until he faces Errol Spence first.

Claressa Shields steering into a dead end?

Image: Claressa Shields steering into a dead end?

By Gav Duthie: It is entirely possible that Claressa Shields 4-0 (2) is just too good. The unified Super Middleweight world champion faces Tori Nelson 17-0-3 (2) tonight. Boxrec has the 41-year-old Nelson at #2 in their rankings so the question is what does Shields do after this.

Your move WBC

By Gav Duthie: Promoter Yvon Michel has declared the intention of Eleider Alvarez 23-0 (11) not to participate in purse bids for a final, final, final, final eliminator against Oleksandr Gvozdyk 14-0 (12). I apologize that the word final was written 4 times, but it was intentional because this would-be Alvarez’s 4th final eliminator to get a shot at the WBC title held by Adonis Stevenson.
