Gennady “Money” Golovkin

By Angel Flowers: Much myths and legend has swirled around middleweight kingpin Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Many tell of a fearless warrior who wants nothing better than to unify the middleweight title. Golovkin and his management believe he is the most feared fighter in boxing. Recently Golovkin fought Daniel Jacobs who was seen by Golovkin’s promoters as the number two middleweight in boxing on PPV. During this so-called clash of champions between Golovkin and a fighter who in my opinion fought much better than he should have, Golovkin pulled in a whopping 170k pay per view buys after a tough negotiation with Jacobs over what Jacobs wanted for the fight.

Golovkin: The PPV Flop

Image: Golovkin: The PPV Flop

By Angel Flowers: This past weekend the number one middleweight Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fought who many regard as the number #2 middleweight in Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs. This was a fight that Golovkin wanted to price himself out of by not giving Jacobs what was fair. Golovkin argued that he was the “A” side of the fight and Jacobs should be happy with whatever he was given. I can understand this way of thinking, after all who exactly is Daniel Jacobs? Jacobs has only beaten Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin who himself is questionable.

Golovkin separating myth from facts

GGG More Myth Than Legend

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin went to battle with the unheralded Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs this past Saturday night on Pay Per View. From that fight we were able to determine a lot about the middleweight kingpin separating myth from the legend he has inspired. Guys like Golovkin remind me of Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson, an absolute monster until they step in the ring with a semi live body. Golovkin was given a boxing lesson almost the entire fight, his fourth round knockdown of Jacobs was more of a tackle but giving the champion the benefit of doubt we will say it was the only real time he got to Jacobs. Meanwhile Jacobs, a man who was thoroughly dominated then knocked out by Dmitry Pirog looked to have been given Golovkin all kinds of problems, which thoroughly explains to this writer why Golovkin has been acting the way he has.

THE BUSINESS OF BOXING

Boxing is a business much like any other business, the goal is to make a decent amount of money with the less amount of risk. Some boxers like any business do not mind taking the maximum risk available with little money in order further than brand, like a small company risking it all to advertise during the super bowl. Often though some boxers tend to romanticize themselves as wanting to fight the best opposition available regardless of the risk/rewards ratio, this is often a lie than experienced boxing professionals can see through easily.

Billy Jo Saunders: Is he ready for the big time?

saunders9

By Angel Flowers: WBO World Middleweight champion Billy Jo Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) has beaten every opponent placed in front of him. While his KO ratio is slightly less than fifty percent, Saunders has faced and beaten five fighters who were undefeated before facing him including heavy handed Chris Eubank Jr. before ultimately beating Andy lee for the title knocking down the former champion multiple times in the fight.

There are many out there who believe both Eubank and Lee actually won or at least drew in their fight with Saunders, but I am of the mind that if the judges rule against you, stop crying and just get yourself better. In his first defense Saunders has avoided some tough fights in order to fight unknown and feather-fisted Artur Akavov (16-1, 7 KOs) on October 22nd at the Motorpoint Arena, in Cardiff, Wales.

Will Mayweather return to boxing?

floyd5

By Angel Flowers: I am sure that unbeaten superstar Floyd “Money” Mayweather will soon be returning to the sport of boxing and get his 50th win. Ever since Mayweather retired many in the boxing world thought he would not be satisfied unless he had 50 wins despite him saying he was out of the boxing game for good.

Of course, by being Mayweather many people are going to express they want to fight him because it is a low risk high reward type of fight. Mayweather does not pose a health threat with his power and his opponent is guaranteed a career defining payday like the ones Marcos Maidana, Andre Berto and Robert Guerrero received.

Mayweather has expressed interest in fighting the following people but I honestly only see him fighting the one person he didn’t name.

Canelo, Pacquiao & Crawford: Fighters facing the best

canelo223

By Angel Flowers: We have seen recently boxers from all divisions avoiding the tough fights while fighting people who match up favorably against them. With so many titles running around any half decent boxer can get one if they are at the right place at the right time. Unfortunately they then refuse to fight other champions who have raised themselves above the common contenders, everyone is concerned with becoming the next Floyd “Money” Mayweather and do not want to put themselves in a position where they have to fight the tough fights and risk losing their undefeated status.

There are boxers out there though who buck this trend by fighting other world champions to test themselves. I am not speaking about fighters who battle contenders holding a lesser version of a title, I am talking about the cream of the crop. In their last ten fights I think it is obvious which fighters have fought the tough fights and which ones have been running.

Saul Alvarez plans 2017 comeback after injury

1-canelosmith_hoganphotos1

By Angel Flowers: WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez expects to be back in the ring by Cinco de Mayo in 2017 after injuring his right thumb in his 9th round knockout win over World Boxing Organization 154lb champion Liam Smith on September 17.

Alvarez had originally wanted to fight again in December and take on a bigger fight next year on the Mexican holiday. Alvarez expects to get some of the big names around his weight class to fight him, but after what he did to Liam Smith and Amir Khan, I doubt he will get many takers in that department.

I suspect only boxers willing to challenge themselves will be the only contenders, people looking for middleweight kingpin Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to finally step up shouldn’t hold their breath.

Alvarez agreed to fight Gennady Golovkin at 160 pounds and offered to double his biggest payday by giving him a guaranteed 10 million dollars. This is a lot for a fighter whose previous high was just under 5 million for fighting the welterweight Kell “Special K” Brook recently on September 10.

Before that, Golovkin’s biggest payday was $2 million in a title unification bout with former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux last October on HBO pay-per-view in GGG’s only failed pay per view, which failed to break 150,000 buys.

Will Amir Khan vs. Kell Brook finally be made?

khan612345

By Angel Flower: It’s no secret Kell “Special K” Brook and Amir “King” Khan have a pretty heated rivalry going on. Amir Khan has refused to fight Brook in the past because he felt Brook had not done anything to earn the fight and wanted too much money.

I can see this all changing now and expect these two dynamic fighters to finally give the people of the UK the biggest all UK fight of 2017 if not the biggest fight in the world. Fans from both sides of the ocean want to see this match up from two of the toughest men in boxing right now, their resume speaks for itself.

Saul Alvarez – Boxing’s Most Deserved Champion

canelo299

By Angel Flowers: There is a reason Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is the only boxer left that can command pay-per-view dollars unlike most of his peers; he dares to challenge himself. Alvarez has already been in the ring with three future hall of famers such as Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Shane “Sugar” Mosley and Miguel Cotto, despite being only 25.

No other boxer in history can boast such accomplishments at such a young age as Saul Alvarez when you look at how he did it. After winning the World Boxing Council junior middleweight vacant title, Alvarez, despite numerous warnings, took on Austin Trout in order to unify the belts, which he later lost to Floyd Mayweather in 2013. Despite the fact Mayweather was considered the top pound for pound boxer in the world, Alvarez was willing to go down in weight from his natural 154 to 152 to make a fight that he would be seen as a huge underdog.
