Naoya Inoue says he is preparing with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in mind, keeping attention on a potential fight between two of boxing’s leading pound-for-pound fighters.
“Yes, I’m preparing with Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in mind,” Inoue said, according to a quote shared by Source of Boxing.
That falls short of a fight announcement, but it gives fans something more concrete than another expression of interest. Inoue is thinking about Bam as an opponent while preparing for his next appearance.
The appeal is easy to understand. Neither bantamweight nor super bantamweight has an abundance of big names, leaving these two as the obvious pairing for a fight capable of drawing attention beyond followers of the lighter divisions.
Inoue has already cleaned out the 122-pound division, collecting all four belts and beating the opponents put in front of him. Bam is working toward doing the same at 118. Bringing them together would give Inoue a fresh challenge and Rodriguez an opportunity to turn his success across the lower weights into the biggest victory of his career.
There are still questions about the timing. Inoue’s agent previously identified March 2027 as the deadline for the fight, with a move to featherweight an alternative if it cannot be arranged. That timetable predates this latest quote.
For Bam, the challenge extends beyond adding four pounds. His footwork and ability to attack from changing angles could make Inoue work harder to find his target. However, Rodriguez would need to maintain that approach against a bigger puncher who can punish him whenever he stays within range too long.
That is what makes the pairing interesting. Bam has the skill to give Inoue something different to solve, while Inoue would test whether Rodriguez’s offense remains as effective against an elite fighter at 122.
Fans have good reason to want this one. Another defense against a lesser-known challenger would be difficult to sell with Bam available. Inoue’s comments keep the possibility alive, but an agreement is still needed before anticipation becomes a date on the calendar.
