Jaime Munguia Buys Time, But Bektemir Melikuziev Isn’t Going Away

Jaime Munguia secured room to maneuver around an overdue mandatory defense, clearing a route to meet Nikita Zon on October 31 with his WBA super middleweight belt intact. Bektemir Melikuziev receives a firmer pledge for what follows, though Munguia reaps the instant reward.

This reported step aside setup introduces clear barriers against future stalls. Guardrails like these are important given that the WBA had already formally mandated the title bout. Melikuziev is asked to sit and wait on a fight the WBA deemed past due.

The sanctioning body ordered Munguia against Melikuziev back on September 21, granting both corners until October 21 to finalize terms. Official notices indicated the champion’s mandatory window actually lapsed on August 30. The champion stood obligated to face his top challenger right then.

According to a Team Munguia dispatch circulated by Cesar Seda, this new deal triggers an additional 30-day negotiating window right after October 31.

Such an extension merely sets up another round of talks instead of placing Melikuziev directly under the arena lights. No date or site was attached to that mandatory meeting. Munguia’s chosen bout holds a firm calendar spot; the actual title challenger must still wait on one.

Zanfer operations head Guillermo Brito confirmed a mutual pact exists, while leaving ultimate ratification in sanctioning hands.

“We have an arrangement, but the WBA still has to determine it,” Brito explained via Izquierdazo.

That boundary stops Munguia’s side from claiming a private deal equals formal sanctioning consent. The missing piece remains legitimate organizational approval.

The sharpest terms target what Munguia cannot pursue going forward. His camp pledges he will steer clear of any intervening bouts, including unifications, prior to squaring off with Melikuziev. The terms also rule out procedural challenges that could stall the defense, alongside a promise not to petition for WBA super champion standing.

These limits aim to shut down bypass options. A unification clash often provides an appealing detour. Seeking an elevated title tier might spark fresh bureaucratic wrangling. The paperwork aims to settle these hurdles before they fuel further delays.

Melikuziev’s camp earns points for locking down explicit pledges. Still, their worth comes down entirely to accountability. Ink on paper means little to a top contender if the next detour merely sparks another cycle of waiting.

With no money figures made public, there is zero evidence Melikuziev took a payout or parted with his title opportunity for cash.

Munguia collects his bout with Zon; Melikuziev collects signed guarantees for the future. The WBA faces the challenge of transforming those guarantees into an actual title fight with a fixed date once October 31 wraps up.

Kicking the can down the road to take on Zon buys Munguia a brief reprieve, but it does not erase the problem waiting in the wings. Melikuziev is not going to politely fade into the background, and the WBA is eventually going to run out of patience for stall tactics. Melikuziev is a legitimate puncher who brings real risk to anyone trying to play it safe at 168 pounds.

Holding a belt means taking on the top contenders when their turn arrives. If Munguia wants the prestige, the marketing power, and the leverage of being a recognized champion, he has to earn it in the ring against the rightful mandatory. If he prefers softer touches and exhibition-style tune-ups, the honorable move is to vacate the strap and let the hungry contenders fight for it. Sitting on a title while dodging a live wire like Bektemir just holds up the division.
