Jack Catterall is keeping his claim on Teofimo Lopez’s next fight visible while a potential Ryan Garcia matchup attracts attention. Catterall tagged Lopez on X with an eyes emoji and a staring-eyes GIF, a brief reminder that the ordered defense remains unresolved.
The WBA ordered the welterweight champions Teofimo and Catterall to negotiate in September, giving them until October 22 to reach an agreement before possible purse bids. Catterall holds the organization’s regular title, while Teofimo holds its super championship.
Catterall has earned his shot and has little reason to wait while Teofimo pursues Ryan. Agreeing to another delay would let the champion dictate when—or whether—he gets that opportunity. His public reminder keeps pressure on Teofimo to address the ordered defense

Ryan brings the massive gate, the circus spotlight, and the blockbuster money for Lopez. Catterall brings none of that. Fighting Catterall means defending a belt against an awkward spoiler who could derail everything for a fraction of the pay.
That leaves Teofimo stuck. Chasing a blockbuster with Ryan sounds great, but the WBA order will not simply disappear. Hunting for a bigger payday is understandable, but actually getting sanctioning body approval to ignore a mandatory challenger is an entirely different battle.
Teofimo might need to vacate his belt to chase the massive check waiting with Ryan Garcia. Taking on Jack Catterall beforehand puts the entire jackpot in jeopardy. One slip against Catterall ruins his leverage, killing the buzz for the megafight.
Pretending the order does not exist invites the WBA to strip him. The October 22 cutoff marks the end of negotiations rather than an instant title stripping, yet Lopez cannot stall forever. Catterall forced the reality into the open: defend against him or walk away from the belt to fight Ryan empty-handed.
