Frank Martin is calling for bouts with Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, or Isaac Pitbull Cruz. Still, his recent ring activity shows he has serious ground to cover before getting those marquee fights.
The 31-year-old light welterweight contender welcomed every major challenge, targeting Davis in particular.
“Man, I love that rematch,” Martin said to Fight Hub TV. He also acknowledged that facing Cruz or Lamont Roach could build momentum toward a second Davis meeting.
Martin pointed to weight issues during his initial loss to Davis without detailing what went wrong. Vague explanations will not convince the public to buy a sequel. He must deliver clear proof inside the ropes that a second meeting would end differently.
The inactivity is killing whatever marketability he had left from the Tank pay-per-view. Since the lucrative 2024 bout with Davis, Martin has made only two ring appearances. His sole win since 2023 was a decision over veteran Rances Barthelemy, followed by a ten-round draw against Nahir Albright earlier this year.
Albright was supposed to be a routine showcase to get him winning, and instead, Martin escaped with a gift draw in a fight that many observers thought he dropped. When you look shaky against Albright, you have zero leverage to demand dates with elite champions.
Martin steps into the ring against Tarik Zaina on October 24 for a rebuilding fight. Winning is essential, yet vanishing into inactivity afterward would erase any progress.
“We ain’t chasing nobody,” Martin stated. “I just want to put on a dominant performance,” noting he is ready for whatever comes next.
Waiting for top fighters to call him rarely works. Neither Stevenson nor Davis has an incentive to pick him when Martin carries minimal buzz. Cruz offers the most practical path forward. The aggressive style Cruz brings could create an explosive contest, giving Martin a platform to secure a defining victory.
Joining Zuffa could also solve his scheduling problems if the promotion delivers active fight dates. Constant ring time will do far more for his career than calling out superstars he cannot book.
