Floyd Schofield Sr. Questions Chicago’s Title Fight Weight Restriction

Floyd Schofield Sr. is questioning how his son’s team allowed Kid Austin to approach his Chicago title fight against Lucas Bahdi without explaining Illinois’ 10-pound weight restriction. He claims the fighter discovered the requirement online himself rather than hearing it from the people handling his career.

“My whole team, nobody said, ‘Yo, listen.’ It wasn’t in the contract. Nothing. So to me, you know, it’s like, ‘All right, cool. I understand the playing field now.’ You know, luckily Kid went online yesterday, and he found out himself,” Schofield Sr. said to MillCity Boxing.

Illinois’ boxing rules limit contestants in title bouts to gaining no more than 10 pounds above their official weight by the fight-day weight check. A fighter recording 135 pounds would therefore have a 145-pound limit at that check. This is a state requirement that applies to both contestants.

Sr. argues that Chicago was a questionable choice for a large lightweight, particularly when neither fighter has an established following there, in his view. He also claims Oscar De La Hoya’s side told him they were unaware of the restriction.

The strongest complaint is the alleged failure to communicate. A second weight requirement affects how a fighter plans his recovery after making the lightweight limit. Discovering it late creates an avoidable complication during the final preparations, even if the team can comfortably meet it.

However, Sr.’s suggestion that the location was deliberately selected to disadvantage his son is unsupported by evidence in the interview. The restriction itself does not establish that anyone targeted Kid Austin.

Sr. also insists the limit will have no effect, claiming his son is already 146 pounds, fully hydrated, and completing 15 rounds in training. That makes this primarily a dispute over preparation and trust.

If Kid Austin is as close to the required weight as his father claims, the team can manage the restriction. What Sr. wants explained is why his son had to discover it himself.
