Emanuel Navarrete Targets Three Belts Against O’Shaquie Foster

Naoya Inoue has what most world champions are still chasing: all four major belts in his division. Emanuel Navarrete can move a step closer to that position on October 24, when he faces O’Shaquie Foster in a three-belt super featherweight unification fight in San Antonio.

That gives boxing’s title picture something more useful than another list of belt holders. The Navarrete–Foster winner will leave with the IBF, WBO and WBC championships, reducing the number of separate champions at 130 pounds and putting an undisputed fight within reach. Top Rank has confirmed those three titles will be at stake.

Inoue, 33-0 with 27 knockouts, holds the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO titles at super bantamweight. He retained the collection by defeating Junto Nakatani in May. His position gives challengers a clear target: they must beat him to take any of the four major championships at 122 pounds.

Elsewhere, winning a world title can leave a fighter with considerable unfinished business. Holding two belts makes someone a unified champion. Holding all four makes him undisputed. Adding the IBO championship does not replace a missing WBA, WBC, IBF or WBO belt.

Navarrete’s fight with Foster offers a practical example of that difference. Navarrete, 40-2-1 with 33 knockouts, brings the IBF and WBO titles. Foster brings the WBC belt. Even with victory, either man would still need the WBA championship to complete the set.

The benefit for supporters is a stronger answer to who leads the division. Separate champions can build separate careers, each defending a belt without facing the other titleholders. Unification forces at least two of those claims to be tested against each other.

Collecting belts should lead to better fights. Inoue has already completed that process at super bantamweight. Navarrete and Foster are taking another step toward it, and their October 24 meeting gives fans a fight that can settle something beyond another successful title defense.
