Ben Whittaker Lacks Substance For Bivol, Warren Argues

By Boxing News 24 Desk - 10/05/2026 - Comments

Ben Whittaker’s title opportunity has come before his stamina has caught up, according to Frank Warren, who told Playbook Boxing that a Dmitry Bivol fight would be a severe mismatch.

His victory over Conor Wallace leaves Matchroom with an awkward choice. Pursuing Bivol now risks exposing Whittaker before he can correct his weaknesses. Taking a demanding preparation fight risks losing the opportunity through defeat.

“He runs out of gas. He hasn’t got a great engine,” Warren said to Playbook Boxing. Asked about facing Bivol, he added: “Anyone who makes that fight should be reported to the NSPCC.”

“Matchroom done a good job in promoting him. He got everybody talking about him, but you’ve got to have some substance then. And the substance at the end of the day just isn’t there.”

Wallace’s late rally supplies the strongest evidence for Warren’s criticism. Whittaker struggled when his opponent kept advancing and forced him to work while tired. Bivol’s disciplined combinations and positioning could make those demands arrive earlier, with fewer opportunities to recover.

Waiting alone will not solve that. Whittaker needs rounds that teach him to control his effort, maintain his defense, and respond when an opponent refuses to cooperate. An easy stoppage would offer little evidence that he has learned those lessons.

Warren’s suggestions of Joshua Buatsi or Willie Hutchinson come with an obvious commercial incentive: either could give Queensberry a valuable victory over a heavily promoted Matchroom fighter. They would also test whether Whittaker can withstand sustained pressure from a dangerous domestic contender.

That is the difficulty with using either as preparation. The test could become the defeat that derails the Bivol route.

Whittaker’s highlights have accelerated his popularity. His ring education needs more time. Once fatigue reduces his movement, the defensive habits behind the spectacle become harder to conceal.

Matchroom must now decide how much risk to accept while bringing his boxing up to the level his promotion already promises.
