Aaron McKenna became a world champion Saturday night, defeating Etinosa Oliha by unanimous decision to capture the vacant IBF middleweight title at Dublin’s 3Arena.
Judges scored the 12-round main event 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 for the 27-year-old, who controlled the action with movement and combination punching in his first professional bout in Ireland.
McKenna leveraged his reach to target Oliha upstairs and downstairs, stepping out of distance before the Italian challenger could answer effectively.
Oliha tried to press forward and turn the fight into a physical battle, but the hit-and-move strategy offered no stationary target. When the challenger pressed inside, clean right hands and uppercuts met him on the way in.
The fight settled into a clear pattern through the middle rounds. Oliha kept marching forward, occasionally connecting to the body, yet found no answer for the work rate at range. When exchanges did break out on the inside, McKenna held his ground before stepping back into open space.
A clash of heads left a cut on McKenna’s forehead later in the contest, though it barely disrupted his performance. Driven on by the Dublin crowd, he kept picking shots while banking the late rounds.
Needing a stoppage late, Oliha never landed the clean shot necessary to change the outcome.
The victory gives Ireland its first middleweight world champion since Andy Lee and puts McKenna among the major titleholders at 160 pounds.
Janibek Alimkhanuly’s removal as IBF champion opened the door for a new name to take possession of the belt. McKenna capitalized in front of his home crowd, completing the biggest victory of his 21-fight professional career.
