Yoenli Hernandez Named WBO Mandatory for Denzel Bentley

The WBO confirmed the Cuban southpaw as Bentley’s mandatory challenger but has yet to decide whether the new champion must defend the title immediately.

Yoenli Hernandez has moved within one decision of his first world title fight after the WBO officially named him the mandatory challenger for middleweight champion Denzel Bentley. The sanctioning body will now decide whether Bentley must defend against Hernandez immediately or receive approval for a voluntary defense first.

The designation came in the same WBO resolution that accepted Janibek Alimkhanuly’s decision to relinquish the title and elevated Bentley from interim champion to full WBO titleholder.

The committee, however, stopped short of ordering the fight immediately.

Instead, the WBO reserved the right to determine later whether Bentley’s first title defense must come against Hernandez or if the new champion will be permitted to make a voluntary defense first. No timetable for that decision was included in the resolution.

If the WBO orders the mandatory defense, Bentley would begin his championship reign against one of the division’s most dangerous contenders.

Hernandez (10-0, 9 KOs) has built a reputation as one of boxing’s top middleweight prospects after a decorated amateur career that included multiple Cuban national titles plus international success. Since turning professional, the southpaw has continued to climb the rankings while establishing himself as one of the division’s most avoided contenders.

The committee’s ruling leaves Bentley’s immediate future uncertain. A voluntary defense would give him an opportunity to make his first title defense against another opponent before eventually satisfying the mandatory obligation.

Hernandez, 29, now occupies the front of the line for the WBO championship.

The next move belongs to the WBO, which must determine whether Bentley opens his reign with a mandatory defense against Hernandez or receives approval for a voluntary bout before the title shot is enforced.
