Garcia says Benn’s relentless pressure will create the opening he needs, while Benn promises the WBC welterweight title fight ends inside five rounds.
Ryan Garcia believes Conor Benn’s aggressive approach will lead him into a knockout when they fight for the WBC welterweight title on September 12 in Las Vegas. Benn dismissed that prediction and vowed to stop Garcia within five rounds.
“You’re going to get hit, and you’re like, ‘What the hell just hit me?’ And it’s going to happen over and over and over,” Ryan said on the Mr. Verzace podcast. “Then before you know it, you’re going to get so angry, and you’re going to run into something bad. Then you’re going to be on the floor like, ‘What happened?’ Then I’m going to finish you off. That’s all that’s going to happen.”
Benn quickly rejected that forecast, remaining convinced Ryan will not survive past the middle rounds. The British challenger questioned Ryan’s toughness, pointing to previous fights where Garcia took a knee after getting hurt.
“Five rounds or less,” Benn stated. “I mean it, and I stand on that. You would not make it past five. I just don’t respect people who have no heart who want to look for the easy way out. He has talent, athleticism, and youth. Yeah, I give him that. But I’m a fighter. So when I put it on him in there, we’ll see how he handles that. Come meet me in the middle of the ring first round. Let’s have a shootout.”
Ryan said his experience is the edge. He believes Benn will realize there are answers for everything he brings once the rounds begin.
“He’s going to learn real quick how actually experienced I am in the ring,” Ryan said. “He’s going to find out real quick I have an answer for all of them. As the rounds go by, he’s going to realize, ‘Damn, my level’s just not here yet.’ Then he’s going to come back and probably do really well, but this is just too much for him.”
