Mike McCallum knocked out Donald Curry with a devastating fifth-round left hook that remains one of the greatest one-punch finishes in championship boxing history. Curry controlled the opening rounds before one perfectly timed counter changed the fight and both careers.

Many favored Curry’s speed and sharper boxing to carry him to another world championship. Instead, one perfectly timed punch produced one of the greatest knockouts of the decade.

The scheduled 15-round championship bout was televised by HBO from the Caesars Palace Sports Pavilion in Paradise, Nevada. Richard Steele served as referee, while Guy Jutras, Jerry Roth and Ove Ovesen handled the scoring. An official attendance figure was never widely reported, but the event drew major attention as one of the biggest championship fights of 1987.

McCallum was making the sixth defense of the WBA junior middleweight title he had won in 1984. Nicknamed “The Body Snatcher,” the Jamaican-born master tactician had knocked out every opponent during his title reign. Even with those accomplishments, sportsbooks installed him as a 2-1 underdog.

Curry entered as the WBA’s top contender after previously holding the WBA, WBC, IBF and Ring Magazine welterweight championships. Moving to 154 pounds offered a fresh opportunity to reestablish himself among boxing’s elite and position himself for even bigger fights.

The fight also carried significant financial rewards. McCallum earned a reported $475,000, while Curry received $425,000, excellent purses for championship fighters during that era.

For four rounds, the betting odds appeared justified. Curry’s jab repeatedly beat McCallum to the target. His hand speed, combinations and movement kept the champion from settling into his rhythm, and a sharp right hand in the second round buckled McCallum’s knees. By the end of the fourth, Curry had built a comfortable lead on all three scorecards. McCallum remained dangerous, but he looked a step behind as Curry controlled the action.

At 1:14 into Round 5, Curry stepped inside and drove a right hand toward McCallum’s body. McCallum anticipated the attack, gave a subtle body feint of his own, then unleashed a crushing left hook that landed flush on Curry’s jaw. The fight ended instantly.

Curry crashed flat onto his back, staring toward the lights as Steele began the count. He slowly regained awareness around seven but never gathered himself in time to continue. The referee completed the count, and McCallum had retained his championship with one of boxing’s most unforgettable single punches.

The knockout earned KO Magazine’s Knockout of the Year honors and remains one of the finest one-punch finishes ever shown on HBO. Ironically, Sugar Ray Leonard worked the broadcast that night after Curry had reportedly objected to his presence on the telecast, which brought an extra bit of drama to an already memorable evening.

McCallum later vacated the WBA title to pursue championships at middleweight and light heavyweight, eventually becoming a three-division world champion and earning induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Although he never landed the marquee fights against Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns or Roberto Durán, his body of work cemented his reputation as one of boxing’s most accomplished champions.

The defeat for Curry proved far more damaging than anyone expected. He won a handful of fights afterward but never returned to the level that once made him one of the sport’s pound-for-pound stars, suffering later defeats to Michael Nunn and Terry Norris before retiring.

More than three decades later, McCallum’s left hook remains one of the greatest one-punch knockouts in championship boxing history and the defining moment of an unforgettable title fight.
