The former title challenger says Eubank is his first choice before pursuing a world title and a future Hamzah Sheeraz unification fight.
Edgar Berlanga wasted no time outlining his next move after stopping Steven Butler, naming Chris Eubank Jr. as the fight he wants most. The Puerto Rican contender also listed Jaime Munguia, Caleb Plant, Jermall Charlo and Hamzah Sheeraz among the opponents he hopes to face.
“I want Chris Eubank. I’ve been talking about him for a long time. I think that would be a big, big mega-fight in London. We can get it on in November or December. I’m really trying to shoot for that fight.
“If he’s not on the menu, we got Jaime Munguia. That’s a big fight. It’s Mexico against Puerto Rico. It’s going to be a big, big night. He’s young, he’s explosive. You got Caleb Plant. I don’t know if he’s still retired or if he’s coming back. You got Jermall Charlo. That’s a great fight as well.
“You know the fight that we want. The Hamza Sheeraz fight. We want that fight. I want that smoke. But before I get that smoke, I want a world title, and I want to take it from Munguia or one of these guys. That way when I do meet up with Hamzah Sheeraz, he’s going to have the WBO, and I’m going to have a world title. We can do a unification fight, and it’s going to be the biggest fight in boxing.”
Berlanga is aiming for the biggest names available, but several of those matchups may prove difficult to secure. Eubank has long been linked with a December date, Munguia has his own options, Plant’s future remains uncertain, and Charlo has fought only sporadically in recent years. Sheeraz also has business to attend to before a meeting with Berlanga becomes realistic.
The biggest obstacle is that Berlanga has yet to capture a world title. He believes winning one first would raise the value of a future fight with Sheeraz, allowing the two to meet in a unification bout rather than as contenders. Berlanga has made his intentions clear after his victory over Butler, even if turning that wish list into signed contracts will be the difficult part.
