Mandatory challenger says Gervonta Davis’ renewed interest in Devin Haney raises questions after no title deal was announced
Floyd Schofield is questioning Gervonta Davis’ intentions after the deadline for their WBA-ordered title negotiations passed without a fight being announced. The unbeaten mandatory challenger says Davis’ renewed interest in Devin Haney came at a curious time and left him wondering whether the lightweight champion ever intended to face him.
“I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but my dad is saying that’s a clear duck,” said Floyd Schofield Jr. to MillCity Boxing. “Now, all of a sudden on the same way that we were supposed to come to an agreement for a purse bid, now you want to fight Devin Haney.
“You could have fought Devin last year. You could have fought Devin when you was lining up that fight with Jake Paul. Now, all of a sudden, you want to fight Devin. I don’t want to say what it is.”
Schofield’s father agreed with his son’s view of the situation.
“That man doesn’t want to fight you. It’s okay to say, ‘I don’t want to fight,'” said Schofield Sr.
Schofield Jr. stopped short of directly accusing Davis of avoiding him, but said the timing of the recent Haney talk raised questions.
“I’m not going to say what I want to say, but it’s a little weird. There’s something shaky in there. I ain’t going to lie,” said Schofield Jr. about Davis being linked to a Haney fight. “That’s some bitch stuff.”
The WBA ordered Davis to defend his lightweight title against Schofield in May and gave both sides until June 22 to negotiate a deal. As of June 24, no fight had been officially announced.
Davis has recently been linked to a potential fight against Haney, while Schofield remains the WBA’s mandatory challenger at 135 pounds with a 19-0 record and 13 knockouts.
If the title changes hands outside the ring, Schofield says he is more than willing to accept it.
“Hey, I’ll take the belt [WBA lightweight title]. Thank you,” said Schofield Jr.
