Davis came in heavy for the second time in three fights as criticism grows ahead of Saturday’s Norfolk rematch
Keyshawn Davis missed weight Friday for his rematch against Nahir Albright, creating fresh questions about his discipline and future at 140 pounds ahead of Saturday night’s fight in Norfolk, Virginia. The weigh-in tension quickly escalated when Albright appeared to challenge Davis directly during their face-off.
Albright made weight without issue ahead of the 12-round rematch at Scope Arena.
The weigh-in quickly turned tense after Albright appeared to send a message directly at Davis during their face-off.
“Be professional,” Albright said in a clip later posted by DAZN Boxing.
The missed weight immediately created reactions online because Davis has already dealt with weight problems before. Last year, Davis lost the WBO lightweight title on the scales after missing weight by more than four pounds ahead of his planned defense against Edwin De Los Santos.
Friday also marked the second time Davis has failed to make weight in his last three fights.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum admitted Davis is struggling to make 140 pounds and suggested the problem may continue going forward.
“Well, you know, obviously, he has trouble with the weight at 140,” Arum said to Fighthype. “The problem is that the next division is seven pounds. That’s a big difference.”
Arum also compared Friday’s miss to Davis previously missing by more than four pounds before the canceled De Los Santos fight last year.
“That was inexcusable because he missed weight by five pounds,” Arum said.
“Now here he’s missed weight by 0.1, which he’ll take off and come in under 140 or under.”
Keyshawn was later asked by DAZN what he told Albright during Friday’s face-off.
“I didn’t say nothing,” said Davis. “That’s just what I do. I knock people out.”
When asked what type of performance he expects to deliver in the rematch, Keyshawn gave a short response.
“An unexpectable show.”
Former two-division world champion Tim Bradley also reacted strongly to Keyshawn missing weight for the second time in his last three fights.
“The last time you was in Norfolk, you didn’t make weight,” Bradley said on his channel.
“Then you come on the scales on this one and another homecoming, and you don’t make weight. I don’t care if it’s 0.1.”
Bradley later questioned how the difficult weight cut could affect Keyshawn’s performance against Albright on Saturday night.
“I don’t know what version we gonna get of Keyshawn Davis,” Bradley said.
