WBO and WBA featherweight champions linked to bout as early talks continue
A unification fight between Rafael Espinoza and Brandon Figueroa is being targeted for September 2026. The proposed bout would match the WBO and WBA featherweight champions if an agreement is reached.
Espinoza (28-0, 24 KOs) holds the WBO title, while Figueroa (27-2-1, 20 KOs) is the WBA champion. Early talks for the fight first surfaced in March, and the matchup has remained in play as both fighters continue forward as belt holders at 126.
Figueroa’s greatest strength is also his biggest risk. He keeps his head in the phone booth, which is exactly where Espinoza lands his most devastating shot: the short, compact lead uppercut.
We saw Espinoza use this to drop Sergio Chirino Sanchez multiple times. If Figueroa tries to burrow into Espinoza’s chest, he is essentially walking right into the strike zone for those long-lever uppercuts.
The big question for September: Does Figueroa’s chin allow him to eat those skyscraper uppercuts long enough to break Espinoza’s body down? If he survives the first six rounds, the momentum usually shifts his way.
Neither fighter has shown a preference for low-activity fights, which increases the likelihood of sustained exchanges.
No agreement has been finalized, but the targeted timeline suggests both sides are working toward the same window. If completed, the fight would bring together two titleholders in one of the division’s more direct style matchups.
One of the most interesting subplots in this negotiation, first highlighted during early talks in March, is that both fighters are trained by Manny Robles.

There has been growing talk that this fight could be a primary target for a Riyadh Season event or a major card in Texas, where Figueroa has a massive following.
With Turki Alalshikh showing increased interest in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions lately, the financial backing for a unification like this is more realistic than it would have been a few years ago.
