Light heavyweight bout lands on Wardley–Dubois card as Callum Smith title fight remains without a date
David Morrell is set to face Zak Chelli on May 9 in Manchester after his WBO-ordered fight with Callum Smith stalled. The move keeps Morrell active while no rescheduled date for the interim title bout has been confirmed.
Dan Rafael reported Morrell and Chelli are set for a 10-round bout on Queensberry’s Wardley vs. Dubois card. On the surface, it is a stay-busy fight. In practice, it looks like a fighter stepping outside a stalled title route.
Morrell was ordered to face Smith for the WBO interim light heavyweight title last July. Since then, the matchup has dragged through long negotiations, a delayed announcement, and then a cancellation when Smith withdrew from the scheduled April 18 fight because of injury. No replacement date has been confirmed.

While the WBO interim title route with Callum Smith looked good on paper, the reality of it, with dragged-out negotiations, Smith’s injury-forced withdrawal from the April 18 date, and zero clarity on a reschedule, was quickly becoming a trap.
