WBO No. 1 contender says he previously reached out before Lemos fight
Keyshawn Davis says he’ll fight Andy Cruz. He just wants it to “make sense.”
Cruz beat him four times in the amateurs. That history hasn’t disappeared.
“I’ll still fight him, though,” Davis said in an interview with Fight Hub TV. “It’s just got to make sense. And what people don’t realize is, my first homecoming, y’all must have forgot, but we reached out to Andy Cruz.”
Davis says he pushed for the fight before his November 2024 bout with Gustavo Lemos. He contacted Cruz’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, directly.
“My very first homecoming, before I was about to fight Gustavo Lemos, I reached out to Andy Cruz,” Davis said. “I reached out to Eddie Hearn, and he said, no, he doesn’t want to make the fight right now. It’s a little premature.”
Davis wants credit for trying early.
“I reached out to him already, and then I got Lemos,” Davis said. “So, I wish people would give me my credit on that. I actually tried to fight this guy the very first time I had a chance to ask for an opponent.”
He is coming off a stoppage win over Jamaine Ortiz on January 31 in his debut at junior welterweight. That result moved him to No. 1 in the WBO rankings at 140. He is now in line for a title shot.
What comes next is not settled. Davis has mentioned a title fight at 140, where Shakur Stevenson holds the WBO belt. He has also spoken about moving up to 147 for bigger opportunities.
Cruz is coming off a majority decision loss to IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla on January 24 in Las Vegas. The defeat slowed his climb, but the amateur record between the two still hangs over the matchup.
Whether “make sense” means now or later is still unclear.
