Frank Martin continues comeback Feb. 21 vs Nahir Albright

Albright’s volume and inside work pose new problem

Frank Martin faces Nahir Albright on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, continuing his rebuild at 140 pounds after last year’s loss to Gervonta Davis. The bout marks his second test at super lightweight and a necessary proving ground against a younger pressure fighter.

While much of the mainstream talk still circles his 2024 loss to Gervonta Davis, Martin has already gone back to work, tightening his guard, sharpening the jab, and putting rounds in to move beyond that night.

Martin continues comeback after December knockout win

Last December, Martin showed what he still brings to the ring when he stopped Rances Barthelemy in four rounds. He carried his power up in weight, let his hands go with conviction, and answered the quiet talk about where his head was after the Davis loss. The finish settled him.

Beating a 40-year-old Barthelemy is one assignment. Standing in with a younger, high-output pressure fighter like Albright is another kind of night. Albright throws in bunches, keeps his feet under him, and does not wait for space. This second fight at super lightweight is where the real read comes in, whether Martin can hold his ground, match the pace, and impose his power on a man who will not give him a breather.

Albright is a Philadelphia native who carries the signature Philly Tough reputation into the ring. Representing the Philadelphia Smoke gym, he specializes in a brand of gritty pressure that can be a nightmare for technical southpaws. Albright focuses on making the fight ugly by shortening the distance and forcing his opponents into physical exchanges that drain the gas tank.

“Francis Barthelemy is old. He was done. He was done. We was expecting Frank to do that,” said Albright’s trainer, Rashiem Jefferson Sr, to YSM Sports Media, minimizing the importance of Frank Martin’s victory over  Barthelemy last December.

For Martin, the tactical challenge is clear. His success has always relied on elite timing and the ability to maintain separation. Against Davis, that pressure eventually broke his rhythm and led to the eighth-round stoppage. While Martin looked sharp against Barthelemy, he must now prove he can keep a younger pursuer like Albright off his chest. Handling a swarmer without giving up ground is a necessary skill for any title contender at 140 pounds.

Albright enters as a dangerous underdog who has already proven he can hang with top-tier prospects. He pushed Keyshawn Davis to a razor-thin majority decision in 2023. Even though that result was later changed to a no-contest, the fight proved Albright has a massive engine. A victory over a name like Martin would catapult him into the rankings and immediately disrupt the comeback plans currently being laid out for the Ghost.

“Woo is coming off that victory with everything behind him. I think Woo is on a high horse and we going to get the job done,” Jefferson said about the confidence Albright has after his win over Kelvin Davis last June.

This matchup is more than just another date on the calendar. It represents a significant crossroad for Martin, who must dominate to prove his transition to super lightweight is complete and that he belongs among the division’s elite like Richardson Hitchins or Jose Ramirez. A loss or even a struggling, narrow victory would suggest that the blueprint left behind from the Davis fight remains an issue. Martin cannot afford to look vulnerable on a stage this large if he intends to remain a factor in a crowded and dangerous division.
