Vargas uses jab control and body work to wear down his most experienced opponent

Emiliano Vargas faced the most seasoned opponent of his career and had to steady himself early. By the ninth round, he had broken Agustin Quintana down with disciplined pressure and sharp combinations.

Quintana, who had upset a prospect earlier in his run, started well. He looped shots over the top and clipped Vargas during exchanges in the early rounds. Vargas stayed disciplined. He started with the jab, switched stances, and invested downstairs with left hooks to the body. He did not rush his work.

By the middle rounds, Vargas’ hand speed and punch selection began to tell. He set his feet and let the combinations rip from the floor up, mixing straight rights with compact hooks. Swelling formed around Quintana’s eyes as the clean punches piled up. Vargas tightened his work, shortened his shots, and kept Quintana backing up.

The second half was controlled by Vargas. He pressed behind the jab, stepped in with authority, and forced Quintana to fight in retreat. Quintana remained game and tried to answer, but his workrate dipped as he absorbed heavier shots. He could not match the younger man’s pace or accuracy.

After nine rounds, with Quintana marked up and taking repeated clean punches, the referee stopped the bout before the tenth began. Quintana disagreed, yet the accumulation of punishment over the later rounds made the decision reasonable.

Vargas improves to 17-0 with 14 knockouts. He adds a durable veteran to his record and shows he can stay composed when clipped early. Quintana falls to 22-3-1 after being worn down across nine hard rounds. It was a proper developmental fight for Vargas, and he handled it like a junior welterweight ready for a higher level.
