Boxing Results: Vergil Ortiz Jr. Destroys Erickson Lubin in Two Rounds to Retain WBC Interim Super Welterweight Title in Fort Worth

WBC Interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) stopped the former WBC Silver Super Welterweight champion Erickson ‘The Hammer’ Lubin (27-3, 19 KOs) in the second round on Saturday night at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The contest was halted at 1:30 of the second round of a scheduled 12 rounds.

In the first round, Lubin controlled with his reach using an effective jab. In the final seconds, Ortiz finally landed a flurry of punches. In the second round, Ortiz had Lubin against the ropes, landing a flurry of punches until Referee James Green called a halt.

In the co-main event, super middleweight Darius ‘DFG’ Fulghum (14-1-1 (12 KOs) fought to a 10-round majority draw against David ‘Dynamite’ Stevens (15-2-1 (10 KOs). There was too much clinching for the vacant WBA Continental North America super middleweight title.

In the first three rounds, it was close with Fulghum having an edge. In the fourth round, Stevens outworked Fulghum, landing an overhand right on the chin in the final minute. Too much clinching.

In the fifth round, after a minute, Fulghum knocked out Stevens’s mouthpiece. Stevens came back to take the round. Again, too much holding, and the fans let them know it. In the sixth round, Stevens clinched by outlanding Fulghum, evening the score.

In the seventh round, after a minute, Stevens landed a hard right on the chin of Fulghum. Stevens was warned for using his forearm several times. In the eighth round, between the clinching, Stevens had an edge.

In the ninth round, Stevens was warned for holding in another close round with the final one that could decide the winner. In the tenth and final round, the fans let them know they didn’t like all the holding in a fight that could be a draw.

The Scores were 96-94 for Fulghum, 95-95, and 95-95. Laurence Cole was the referee.

Robin ‘ROBZ’ Safar (19-0 (13) KOs) defeated Derick ‘Dmilliz’ Miller, Jr. (18-1 (10 KOs) by a 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBA Continental Americas cruiserweight title.

In the second round’s final seconds, Safar head butted Miller, losing a point from Referee Laurence Cole. In the third round’s final minute, Safar rocked Miller with an overhand right on the chin.

In the fourth round, Safar outlanded Miller big time. In the sixth round’s last twenty seconds, Safar knocked out the mouthpiece of Miller with a right on the chin. Miller looked exhausted. In the seventh round, it was all Safar with Miller barely hanging in there.

In the eighth round’s final minute, Miller landed a right, getting the attention of Safar, who came back well in a close round finish. In the ninth round, it was all Safar outpunching Miller, who would come back on occasion.

In the tenth and final round, it was all Safar, but Miller showed heart in hanging in there, getting rocked in the final seconds with a right on the chin.

The scores were 98-91, 99-90, and 99-90.

Middleweight prospect Amari ‘The Reaper’ Jones (15-0 (13 KOs) stopped Shady Gamhour (14-3 (9 KOs) at 2:54 of the third round of a scheduled eight rounds.

In the first two rounds, it was all Jones switching to southpaw. In the third round’s final thirty seconds, a chopping right on the temple of Gamhour, and down he went for an 8-count from referee Ruben Perez. Upon rising, Jones was all over him, landing a right and another on the way down again, with referee Perez waving it off.

Middleweight Eric ‘Cowboy’ Priest (16-0-1 (8 KOs) battled to an eight-round split draw with Esneiker Correa (16-6-3 (14 KOs).

In the first three rounds, Priest had an edge. In the fourth round’s final seconds, Priest landed a combination, getting the attention of Correra.

In the fifth round, Priest hit Correa several times in the body. In the seventh round, Priest continued coming forward, knocking out the mouthpiece of Correa, who was showboating in the final seconds. In the eighth and final round, Correa had his best round, countering Priest.

The scores were 79-73 Priest, 77-75 Correra, and 76-76. James Green was the referee.

Heavyweight 2024 Olympian Joshua Edwards (4-0 (4 KOs) knocked out Zeno ‘The Viking Hammer’ Vooris (5-1 (5 KOs) at 2:35 of the third round of a scheduled six rounds.

In the first round, it was all Edwards, switching to southpaw on occasions, with Voorhis only landing one punch. In the second round, Vooris was cut on the right eyebrow. In the final minute, Vooris was cut on the left eyebrow and was bleeding from the nose.

In the third round, Vooris was bleeding from the left eyebrow with blood smeared over the side of his face when the corner of Vooris stopped the fight. Robert Capo was the referee.

Light welterweight Javier “El Galliaunto” Meza (5-0 (2 KOs) defeated tough Joshua Briones (3-5-1 (2 KOs) by a six-round unanimous decision.

In the first round, it was all Meza. In the second round, both boxers were bleeding from the nose. With a minute remaining, Briones knocked out the mouthpiece of Meza. In the third round, each had their moments.

In the fourth round’s midway point, Meza hurt Briones with a right uppercut to the body. In the final seconds, Meza landed a flurry, having Briones against the ropes. In the fifth round, a flurry from Meza almost put Briones through the ropes. In the sixth and final rounds, in the last minute, Briones rocked Meza, buckling his knees with a right on the chin.

The scores were 59-55, 58-56, and 58-56. Ruben Perez was the referee.

Welterweight Samuel ‘Trouble’ Castellanos (4-0 (3 KOs) knocked out Ricky ‘Slick Rick’ Elizalde (0-2) at 1:55 of the second round of a scheduled four rounds.

In the first round, it was all Castellanos, as Elizade never landed a punch, instead running and clinching. In the second round, with a minute remaining, Elizalde dropped to a knee seconds after taking a punch as his corner threw in the towel. Robert Capo was the referee
