WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. and challenger Devin Haney also made weight for their co-feature fight. Both have looked strong this week, not showing signs of weight drain.
Riyadh Weigh-In: The Numbers
- David Benavidez 174.3 vs. Anthony Yarde 173.9
- Devin Haney 146.6 vs. Brian Norman Jr. 146.12
- Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez 114.6 vs. Fernando Daniel Martinez 113.2
- Abdullah Mason 134 vs. Sam Noakes – 134.9
The one that boxing fans have concerns about for Saturday’s fight is WBC light heavyweight champion Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs). He’s looked gaunt this week, causing some people to worry about whether he’ll be weakened for his defense against the big puncher #4 WBC-ranked Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs).
Bam vs. Martinez: Hidden Gem
WBC and WBO super flyweight champion Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (22-0, 15 KOs) came in at 114.6 lbs today, while his opponent, WBA champion Fernando Martinez (18-0, 9 KOs), weighed in well under the 115-lb limit at 113.2 lbs.
This fight hasn’t been talked about as much as the co-feature bout between Haney and Norman Jr. Still, Rodriguez-Martinez could provide more action due to their aggressive fighting styles.
Lightweight Abdullah Mason (19-0, 17 KOs) weighed in at 134, and Sam Noakes (17-0, 15 KOs) came in at 134.9 for their battle for the vacant WBO 135-lb title. It’s another fight that is worthy of being the chief support or even the headliner on this career, as it’s expected to be entertaining with both fighters throwing bombs nonstop for as long as it lasts.
Norman Jr.’s ‘Go to War’ Vow
“We get rough over here. We respect Devin Haney for what you’re able to do. I respect you, but we got to go to war. So, when I got every little thing, so when you step on the land right here, you’re going to die,” said WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. to MillCity Boxing, talking in battle/war terms about his fight on Saturday night against challenger Devin Haney.
“I got cameras over here, making sure I’m cutting off every angle. So, I’m being respectfully disrespectful,” said Norman Jr.
