Brian Norman Jr. contrasted his son’s mindset, calling him a “cold-blooded, calculated killer” inside the ring, compared to Devin Haney, whom he labels as a “p***y” that runs and “grabs and holds.”
Norman Sr. states that Devin’s father, Bill Haney, has raised a “p***y”. He mentions Haney’s fight with Jorge Linares, in which he did a lot of holding when he’d been hurt.
Norman’s Cold Instinct
“Brian Norman is a cold, calculated killer. He has no emotions,” said Brian Norman Sr. to MillCity Boxing about his son, Brian Jr. “He’s not scared to get hit. When Devin Haney gets in trouble, does he hold on for dear life? We’ve seen it. That’s who he is. Brian Norman does not. He stands and fights.”
Few fans would argue against Norman Jr. not being a “cold, calculated killer.” That’s always been his style of fighting. He looks to destroy his opponents without compunction. He’s a classic example of an emotional soldier.
Haney has been forced to use holding to survive in his fights against Ryan Garcia and Jorge Linares. Without the clinching that he did in those fights, he likely would have been knocked out.
Raised a Killer
“One of us, between me and Bill Haney, raised a p***y in the ring. One of us raised a killer in the ring. When he [Haney] gets in the ring, he’s a p***y. He ran from [Jose] Ramirez. He held and grabbed against [Jorge] Linares. Devin Haney sued to get a loss removed from his record. They are desperately trying to keep that O,” said Norman Sr.
Devin isn’t a puncher, and he never will be. He’s what you call a ‘finesse fighter’ with a hit, move, and hold style. It’s essentially a watered-down version of the old style that Floyd Mayweather Jr. employed during his career, when he still had mobility.
Clinching has been a big part of Haney’s game since the Linares fight on May 29, 2021. Devin was hurt in round 10 by a right hand followed by a right-left combination. For the remainder of the 12-round fight, Haney held constantly.
Ryan Showed the Way
Norman Jr. is going to have to come up with a strategy to deal with the nonstop clinching that Haney does for him to get his shots off on November 22nd. Ryan Garcia took advantage of Haney’s holding by timing him with short check left hooks when he’d reach out to grab him. That’s how he repeatedly hurt him.
If Devin had stopped holding, he’d have been better off after being initially staggered in the first round. He failed to do so. Constant holding had become too ingrained in Haney’s style for him to adapt in that fight. Going by his last fight against Jose Ramirez on May 2, 2025, he’s still using that tactic as a method to neutralize his opponent’s offense.
Bill Has Gone Quiet
“When he’s flat out on that canvas, his daddy is going to be standing there with his d***k in his hand. I think that’s why Bill isn’t talking so much. He learned from that,” said Norman Sr. about Bill having learned his lesson from all the trash-talking and predictions he’d done before Devin’s fight against Ryan Garcia on April 20, 2024.
Before Haney’s mega-fight against Ryan last year in April, Bill was making outrageous predictions. One of them was, “I’m sending Devin in there to kill him literally.” It didn’t work out well for Haney, as he was dropped three times by Kingry in a 12-round majority decision. The fight could have ended in round seven when Devin was out on his feet after being dropped by a left hook from Ryan.
The referee stopped the action and penalized Garcia for hitting on the break. There had been no warning given before the point deduction. That little time out may have saved Haney from being finished off by Ryan.
