The Teofimo Plan B: Shakur Stevenson’s “We Gone Run It” Message to Lamont Roach Jr.

Shakur Stevenson told Lamont Roach Jr. today on social media that they’ll “run it if this other fight don’t go through.” The one that Shakur (24-0, 11 KOs) is referring to is against Teofimo Lopez, who has been pestering online, trying to get a fight.

The Sound of Silence

Teofimo had initially shown interest in fighting Shakur, saying he would “cry like a lil b**** after he whoops him. However, Teo has since gone quiet, which is a sign that he’s concerned about getting the short end of the stick like Stevenson’s last opponent, William Zepeda, got last July in Queens.

Zepeda threw close to 1000 punches and outlanded Shakur by a wide margin. The judges scored it for Shakur as if it were a blowout with these scores:

  • 118-110
  • 118-110
  • 119-109

Shakur’s Untouchable Boxing Class

The scores showed that Shakur can be out-punched by a wide margin and still win. In other words, he’s in the untouchable class where Floyd Mayweather Jr. was at. You can’t beat him by a decision. You can only win by knocking him out, which is nearly impossible with the way he moves around to avoid getting hit with headshots against fighters with power. The only reason Stevenson was stationary against Zepeda is that he’s not a power puncher. He’s a volume guy.

Teofimo won’t want to receive the Zepeda treatment from the judges. So, that might explain why he’s gone quiet, no longer giving Shakur false hope for a fight. With Lopez no longer showing interest, Shakur needs to target one of the attainable fights against one of these contenders:

– Andy Cruz
– Jadier Herrera
– Ernesto Mercado: 140-lb contender
– Floyd Schofield

If Shakur wants to fight someone from the 140-lb division, he should go after Gary Antuanne Russell, Richardson Hitchins, or Subriel Matias.

The Problem with Two Runners

Turki Alalshikh would have a hard time trying to sell a fight between the two Jerry-esque fighters, Shakur and Roach, on DAZN PPV. Fans don’t want to watch two runners going at it in a chess match all night. It only works to match a defensive guy like them against pure sluggers who will chase them. At least then, the fight will sell.
