Edgar Berlanga’s Outburst: “Your Stripper” & Fishnet Fiasco with Oscar De La Hoya

Edgar Berlanga went off on promoter Oscar De La Hoya at the final press conference, throwing fishnets, panties, and bills at him, saying, “Your stripper.”

Berlanga Attacks De La Hoya

The premeditated verbal attack on De La Hoya was in response to his criticizing Berlanga for trying to pass himself off as a Puerto Rican for his fight against Canelo Alvarez. Oscar had also said he didn’t deserve to be in the main event for Saturday’s card, which fans agree with. Berlanga was born in the U.S in New York.

Unsold Tickets: Sheeraz Fight

Berlanga was supposed to be promoting his headliner fight against Hamzah Sheeraz for Saturday, July 12th, in Queens, New York. There are still many unsold tickets for that event. Using his speaking time today at the press conference to get his petty revenge against De La Hoya was foolish.

It doesn’t help promote his fight against Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs). Berlanga could have chosen a better time to try and shame De La Hoya for pointing out what was obvious about him not being Puerto Rican or deserving of main event status.

“A little stripper. For you. Remember this s***?” said Edgar Berlanga during today’s final press conference, waving fishnet stockings at promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

De La Hoya: “No World Titles”

“First of all, you have no world titles. Let me put them on now, baby,” said De La Hoya about panties that Berlanga was waving around. At that point, Berlanga threw a bunch of what appeared to be dollar bills at De La Hoya. “This guys not even Puerto Rican. I’ve been asking for your Puerto Rican passport. Where is it at? I’m more Puerto Rican than you,” said Oscar, who lived on the island in the past.

“That jewelry is probably as fake as hell. Check is jewelry. See if it’s real. Fake jewelry. Come on, man. You can’t even win a world title. Having a parade after losing to Canelo. After you win one world title, you can talk to me.”

“You’re my stripper,” said Berlanga.

De La Hoya is right. Berlanga has never won a world title, and his prospects of ever winning one are slim. With talented super middleweights like Osley Iglesias and Diego Pacheco emerging, Edgar’s chances of beating those guys are poor. Christian Mbilli has too much talent for Berlanga. He is what he is, an entertainer. Berlanga is excellent for events, but he’s not world championship material.
