Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn Rematch Announced: Why Fans Are Calling It a ‘Pathetic Money Grab’

Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn will meet at middleweight for a rematch on September 20th in London. The fight will be contested at 160 with a 10-lb rehydration clause to give Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) a handicap.

Unnecessary Sequel: No Stakes

Turki Alalshikh announced the Eubank Jr. vs. Benn 2 rematch earlier today, and surprisingly, the reaction has been overwhelmingly negative. The general feeling is that Eubank Jr. (35-3, 25 KOs) already beat Benn convincingly by a 12-round unanimous decision last April. A rematch is just seen as an utterly pathetic money grab.

No Stakes for Eubank-Benn

People feel that the rematch is unnecessary because there would be nothing at stake. Eubank Jr-Benn have already fought for nostalgia purposes, playing on the theme of their famous dads having fought ages ago. Having a sequel is silly without the two fighting other boxers.

There’s no point in a rematch because it was a clear decision by the scores 116-112, 116-112, and 116-112. It would have been a better idea for Eubank Jr. and Benn to both show ambition and try for world titles. Neither fighter has done anything in their careers, and is coasting on their famous father’s accomplishments.

Turki should have insisted that Benn challenge WBO welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. to see what he’s made of. We already know he lacks the skills and size to beat Eubank Jr or any of the good middleweights.

Fans are unsure why Turki is backing Benn and Eubank Jr. by financing their rematch. What Turki should have done is list several fighters that both need to beat before he would pay them millions for a rematch.

No Title Ambition for Eubank

Eubank Jr., 35, is obviously not good enough to beat the top middleweights, and he knows better than to try to fight for a world title against champions Janibek Alimkhanuly, Erislandy Lara, or Carlos Adames. So, the best he can do is fight Conor Benn, which is a joke.
