Jermall Charlo says Caleb Plant “doesn’t hit hard,” and he “looks old.” He says he’ll beat WBA interim super middleweight champion Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) because of his experience, power, pressure, and his style when they do eventually fight. The two need to win their tune-up fights this Saturday for them to meet later this year.

Charlo says he thinks Plant doesn’t want to fight him, and is hoping he’ll lose his tune-up fight against Thomas LaManna (39-5-1, 18 KOs) in their 10-round fight this Saturday, May 31st, at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. Their event is on PBC at Prime Video. It starts at 8:00 p.m. ET /5:00 p.m. PT.
Plant has a tough fight againt Jose Armando Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) in the main event, and he might lose it. Caleb is supposed to win, but it’s one that he could lose if Resendiz, 26, puts it on him early, as Trevor McCumby did last September.
Charlo: Plant Looks Old, Weak
“Nah. He got some. I don’t know, dog. Nah, hell no,” said Jermall Charlo to the media when told that Caleb Plant is a SNAC fighter and asked if he’s “worried about him.” “He snuck me, but he couldn’t drop me or no s***,” said Jermall about being slapped by him on July 28, 2023, at the Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence weigh-in.
It’s obvious just by looking at Plant’s fights that he can’t punch at all. If McCumby were a better fighter, he’d have beaten Plant because he exposed him in that fight with the pressure that he put on him. Resendiz is a middleweight, and he’s not the fastest or the most skilled. But if he can get to Plant and stay on his chest to land his shots, he could win.
Plant Doesn’t Want Charlo Fight
“He [Plant] don’t hit hard. He knows that. That’s why he don’t want me to beat him. He don’t want me to fight him. It’s a mind thing, bro. Look, we’re going to fight regardless,” said Charlo about him and Plant. “Me and Caleb Plant are going to fight next. You’re saying Caleb is younger than me? He looks old. I thought he was older than that [32],” said Charlo.
Jermall is right. I don’t think Plant really wants this fight against him because it presents a lot of risk. If Caleb loses to Jermall, he can say goodbye to his last chance of getting a rematch against Canelo Alvarez. It’s better for Plant if Jermall loses his tune-up against LaManna, because that would enable Caleb to fight a tomato can.
