Fury’s Victory: Fair or Foul?

Tyson Fury’s promoter, Bob Arum, believes he’s going to use the same tactics that he employed in his second fight with Deontay Wilder to defeat WBA/WBC/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch on Saturday night in their rematch, live on DAZN PPV in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Fouls As Strategy?

Arum says Fury is “one of the best heavyweights of all time. ” He thinks Fury can follow the Wilder blueprint and defeat Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) to avenge his 12-round split decision defeat on May 18th.

Fury roughed up Wilder, using rabbit punches and low blows to defeat him by a seventh-round knockout four years ago on February 22nd, 2020.

Fouling Usyk might be Fury’s only path to victory on Saturday night because he can’t match him in the skills department, and his size is useless because he won’t be able to grab him as he did against Wilder, Dillian Whyte, and Dereck Chisora.

“I’ve not only been Tyson Fury’s co-promoter but also a Tyson Fury fan,” said Bob Arum during today’s final press conference for the Gypsy King’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night in Riyadh.

“If anyone watched the first Fury-Wilder fight. The first one was a draw, and Wilder hit him with a punch that no human being could get up from, and Tyson did [when given a count while he was unconscious in a very controversial situation].

In the second fight, he knew what he had to do, and he won that fight in a real one-sided way. I’m looking forward to him fighting in that way and being successful on Saturday night.

Cheating To Win?

Arum is going a little overboard with his praise of Fury because he’s not going to beat Usyk with rabbit punches and low blows like he used to subdue Deontay Wilder in their second fight. He threw the rule book out the door with the clinical foul-fest. If Fury tries those tactics against Usyk, it’s likely that the referee will take control of the fight and start penalizing.

I’m hoping Fury doesn’t resort to cheating to try and win, but given all the fighters that have recommended that he use roughhouse tactics, we’ll probably see him use those tactics.

“That being said, he’s fighting a tough, skilled Ukrainian. Oleksandr Usyk is in with one of the best heavyweights of all time, Tyson Fury, and I’m very confident that our man, Tyson, will emerge victorious,” said Arum.

Fury is NOT one of the best heavyweights of all time unless we lower the bar to fit that description. He’s only a guy who beat 39-year-old Wladimir Klitschko, Deontay Wilder, and Dillian Whyte. Fury hasn’t beaten any of the top fighters in this era. He lost to Usyk, and never fought Anthony Joshua or any of the killers in the division, like Martin Bakole and Daniel Dubois.
