Shakur Stevenson Wants to Sign Edwin De Los Santos

Shakur Stevenson wants to sign Edwin De Los Santos to help his career. The lightweight contender has been inactive since his narrow 12-round decision loss to him a year ago on November 16th in Las Vegas.

Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) wants to know what De Los Santos’ promoters are doing with his career because he’s idle since losing to “one of the best fighters in the sport.” If Shakur signed De Los Santos, he’d have one of the best fighters in the 135-lb division, possibly even better than himself.

Surprisingly, De Los Santos hasn’t fought since. Fans frequently mention De Los Santos as one of the best at 135. No reason has been given for why the talented 25-year-old De Los Santos (16-2, 14 KOs) beat Shakur.

Fans are encouraging Shakur to give De Los Santos a rematch because they feel he deserves one. He is a far better choice than fighting the inexperienced 22-year-old Floyd Schofield on February 22nd.

Shakur wanting to sign De Los Santos so that he has an excuse to tell fans why he’s swerving a rematch against him is as weak as it gets. That’s pathetic, but I won’t be surprised if he signs the knockout artist. That’s one less guy Stevenson has to worry about fighting at 135 that would expose him to the light of day.

The three fights that Shakur has had since moving up to lightweight show that he’s not the same fighter in this division as he was at 130 and 126. They hit harder at 135, and Shakur lacks the power, toughness, and bravery to get in the trenches to tough it out with the sharks.

To win at lightweight, fighters must be willing to exchange with their opponents because they can’t get by playing tag, using the hit-and-don’t-get-hit style that Shakur is known for.
