Ryan Garcia says he doesn’t understand why Devin Haney hasn’t chosen to fight since his loss to him on April 20th. He notes that the former two-division world champion Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) doesn’t appear “eager” to fight.
Some people believe that Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) mentally ruined Haney, and he’ll never be the same. It was one of those types of fights that can derail a fighter’s career because of how one-sided it was. Ryan dropped Haney four times in the fight, and it looked like he could have knocked him out.
Ryan Garcia Questions Haney’s Absence
“Me and Devin Haney, I didn’t respect anything he threw, and anytime I wanted to land, I did,” said Ryan Garcia to Fighthype, discussing his fight against Devin Haney from earlier this year in April. “I don’t know what’s going to go on with him. I haven’t heard anything.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with Devin Haney. He doesn’t seem eager to get in the ring. I don’t know where his head space is at, but it seems like his dad continues to talk. So, I might have to beat up Bill,” said Ryan.
Haney’s absence from the ring since his loss to Kingry clearly signals that all is not well with him upstairs. That’s not his normal pattern. He’s consistently fought two to three times a year throughout his professional career, and breaking from that pattern is a red flag that he’s not okay.
Haney has been stewing on that loss, likely playing it over in his head, wishing he’d kept his right hand up to block Garcia’s left hook. It’s classic. Devin is torturing himself, thinking about what he should have done and saying to himself, ‘Why did this happen to me?’
The longer Haney stays out of the ring, the harder it’s going to be for him to get back to where he was before his defeat. When people are stuck in a pattern of avoidance, it gets worse to the point where they’re paralyzed mentally. Could this happen to Haney?
