Fundora Promoter Says Spence Next, Crawford Must Wait

Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter for newly crowned WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) says Errol Spence will be next for his fighter following his 12 round split decision win over champion Tim Tszyu on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Lewkowciz says Terence Crawford, the WBO mandatory, must wait his turn because Fundora will be maximizing the money he can make by fighting Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) next.

Sampson pointed out that Crawford couldn’t sell 90,000 tickets in Dallas the way Spence can, meaning that he’s not a draw and worth fighting next.

Fundora used his 6’5″ height and high work rate to defeat Tszyu with scores of 116-112 for Tszyu, 116-12, and 115-113 for Fundora.

“He will get a rematch, but not now. Now, I need to maximize the most money for the fighter. I believe he deserves it,” said Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter for Fundora. “That is correct,” said Lewkowicz when asked if Errol Spence Jr. is the one he wants to match Fundora against next.

“Crawford will not sell out 90,000 people in Dallas. Yes [Crawford is the better fighter], but everybody waits. Why not Crawford? Let him wait one time or maybe twice, and then he go.

Fundora’s Take

“Errol Spence is a great fighter, and it’s a match made in heaven, but Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the world. I would like to fight him,” said Sebastian Fundora at the post-fight press conference, saying he wants Terence Crawford next after defeating Tim Tszyu on Saturday night to capture the WBC and WBO 154-lb titles.

“I’ve had a whole year. I’d been working on my defense, working on using my jab. It all came out in the fight,” said Fundora. “It’s about maximizing the profit for the fighter, and it would be stupid for me not to do that for him. Besides that, boxing is a business.

“Spence is a very good fighter anyway, especially at 154. So, I believe he will have a shot.”
