Edgar Berlanga Eyes Munguia or Rosado after McCrory Fight on February 24th

Edgar Berlanga says he wants to fight Jaime Munguia or Gabriel Rosado next if he can’t get a title shot against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez if he’s victorious against Padraig McCrory on February 24th in their headliner on DAZN at the Caribe Royale Orlando, Orlando.

The unbeaten Berlanga (21-0, 16 KOs) states that he has one fight left on his contract with Matchroom Boxing after the McCrory (18-0, 9 KOs) fight, and ideally, he’d like that to be against Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) or Canelo. If he can’t get either of those guys, he wants to face Rosado.

DAZN might balk at the idea of the highly ranked Berlanga fighting the 38-year-old journeyman Rosado (26-17-1, 15 KOs) in the main event on their platform. The basic problem is, Rosado has lost his last four fights and hasn’t won since 2021.

Obviously, casual boxing fans would be none the wiser if Rosado were trotted out and used as Berlanga’s opponent to make him look like 24K gold in his next fight, but hardcore fans would know.

The fight wouldn’t generate much buzz, given that the knowledgeable fans would view it as another cherry-pick for the 26-year-old Berlanga, who has yet to face a high-caliber opponent during his eight-year professional career.

Berlanga is ranked #5 WBO, #7 IBF, #8 WBA, and #11 WBC at super middleweight, but he hasn’t looked good in recent fights against these suspects:

  • Jason Quigley
  • Steve Rolls
  • Roamer Alexis Angulo
  • Marcelo Esteban Coceres
  • Demond Nicholson

“We were looking at Munguia. That’s a big fight for us and Canelo,” said Edgar Berlanga to DAZN Boxing when asked who he wants to face next if he successfully defeats Padraig McCrory on February 24th.

“You got this dude, Gabe Rosado. He’s talking smack over here on social media and stuff. He’s talking so much smack on social media that people are really liking the fight. That’s crazy. Yeah,” said Berlanga when asked if he would entertain the idea of fighting Rosado next.

“I got one more fight. I got this fight [with McCrory] in February, and then I got one more fight, and then I’m a free agent. I think after this McCrory fight, a major fight should happen. This year is the year. I can’t be fighting one time a year,” said Berlanga.

It’ll be interesting to see if Hearn re-signs Berlanga to another contract with Matchroom after this one expires after one more fight.
