By Brian Webber: In bad news for Top Rank, 2020 Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis has received a 90-day suspension by the Texas Commission, and his recent fight against Nahir Albright has been changed from a 10 round majority decision to a no-decision.
Grey from Boxrec is reporting the news of the 24-year-old Keyshawn’s suspension from his narrow victory over Albright (16-3, 7 KOs) earlier this month on October 15th at the Fort Bend Community Center in Rosenberg, Texas.
A rematch with Albright would make sense for when Keyshawn comes off his suspension because that’s a fight that should be happening anyway, given how close it was.
Top Rank probably won’t go in that direction because Albright clearly had Keyshawn figured out from the sixth round on, and he would take the fight to him and batter him with combinations like he was doing in the championship rounds.
What the fight showed is that Keyshawn hasn’t improved since his loss to Cuban Andy Cruz in the 2020 Olympics. Keyshawn doesn’t react well when his opponents pressure him and throw combinations like Cruz & Albright were doing.
There’s a lot of speculation from fans about what could be the reason for the suspension, but no one knows the facts. Given that it’s only a three-month suspension, it suggests that Keyshawn didn’t test positive for PEDs.
Keyshawn looked poor against Albright, getting staggered in the eighth round when he was showboating and then running in the final two rounds to keep from getting clipped again.
Albright landed a perfectly timed right hand that snapped Kehyshawn’s head back, causing him to grab to keep from getting dropped. From that point on, Keyshawn was on his bike.
At the end of that fight, Albright looked like the guy with a better future ahead of him than Keyshawn and makes you wonder whether Top Rank is investing in the wrong fighter.
Unfortunately for Keyshawn (9-0, 6 KOs) & Top Rank, his plans on fighting 34-year-old former two-division world champion Jose Pedraza on December 9th is up in smoke and won’t be happening. But given Keyshawn’s interest in fighting the struggling Pedraza, that fight will likely happen in the first quarter of 2024.
Ideally, Keyshawn should fight someone who is still firing on all eight cylinders, as Pedraza hasn’t won a fight in two years, and his recent record is a very soft 0-2-1, and that draw against Richard Commey probably should have been a loss as well.
For Keyshawn to be fighting Pedraza at this stage of his career shows a lack of confidence in himself because there are a lot better options at 135.
I just received an e-mail from the commission in Texas that Keyshawn Davis vs. Nahir Albright has been overturned from a Keyshawn Davis win to a no decision.
Davis has also been placed on a 90 day suspension for a rules violation and will not be eligible to fight this year.
