By Dan Ambrose: Lightweight contender Keyshawn Davis says Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo is an “even fight” for September 30th due to the Mexican star showing signs of “slowing down.

Although the 33-year-old former four-division world champion Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) is the same age as Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs), Keyshawn notes that he’s had a “long career.”

Canelo’s career began three years earlier than Jermell, but he’s had 26 more fights, but many of them were blowouts early earlier.

The real difference is Canelo had more grueling fights than Jermell against these fighters:

  • Gennadiy Golovkin x 3
  • Dmitry Bivol
  • Miguel Cotto
  • Austin Trout
  • Daniel Jacobs
  • Caleb Plant
  • John Ryder

Jermell Charlo’s tough fights:

  • Brian Castano x 2
  • Tony Harrison x 2
  • Vanes Martirosyan
  • Austin Trout
  • Gabriel Rosado
  • Demetrius Hopkins
  • Vito Gasparyan

“It could be if [Jermell] Charlo does good with Canelo,” said Keyshawn Davis to Fighthype on whether a fight between Jermell Charlo & Terence Crawford could be a huge match-up.

“I think it’s an even match-up. I feel like Canelo is slowing down; he’s getting old. He’s had a long a** career.

“He [Jermell] could lose. If he does good doing it, that will be a mega-fight [Charlo vs. Crawford]. It’s all up to how he carries that fight with Canelo because that’s a different monster. Charlo also, he’s off a layoff, but I just think he’s a younger fighter.

“His last fight, he wasn’t slowing down. He wasn’t bad,” Keyshawn said about Jermell. “He wasn’t showing signs of weak s**t

“We all know that Canelo is not just a fighter. He’s like a monster. Canelo, he’s more than a fighter. He’s crazy. I feel like Canelo is one of them. It just depends on how he [Jermell] does with Canelo. I don’t know. Charlo, I don’t know if he’s going to win or not.

“I just think he’s not going to get f***ked up. If he [Jermell] wins, cool. In all reality, Canelo on his best day and Charlo on his best day, Canelo is going to win.

“That would be crazy,” said Keyshawn if Jermell beat Canelo to become a two-division undisputed champion and then goes up against Crawford, a two-division undisputed champion. “That’s bigger than Errol Spence & Terence Crawford because the Charlo fight was getting built off the Errol Spence & Terence Crawford, even during the fight.

“That would definitely be a bigger fight because it’s built up,” said Keyshaawn about a fight between Jermell and Crawford.
