Rolly Romero explains reason Gervonta Davis defeated Ryan Garcia

By Sam Volz: Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero feels that the reasons Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis defeated Ryan Garcia last Saturday night is because he possessed the better movement and Kingry abandoned his normal counterpunching style of fighting and became the aggressor.

The last thing you want to do is go straight at a puncher like Tank Davis (29-0 27 KOs), and that’s what Ryan (23-1, 19 KOs) did.

It’s unclear where Ryan’s well-respected, highly seasoned coach Joe Goosen was in all of this because he should have instructed Ryan to stop going straight at Tank, but he didn’t. If a fighter like Rolly could see what Ryan was doing wrong, it’s troubling that Goosen couldn’t see it too.

“The biggest blessing for Ryan Garcia is at the end of it; he can see who the rats in his life are. Flush out all the trash in his life is God doing it for him. Sometimes you need that,” said Rolly Romero to Fighthype about Ryan Garcia had had a mole in his training camp for his fight with Gervonta Davis.

“Ryan Garcia fought like a champion. That body shot was right on the money. A lot of the casuals say he took a knee. It was a delayed reaction. He took a step back, his entire body got paralyzed, and that’s how it happened.

“Ryan Garcia still fought like a champion. People tend to forget about that. So nothing but respect for Ryan, and for him to stay blessed. More than anything, Ryan wasn’t boxing like himself.

“Ryan is more of a counter-puncher than being an aggressor. I feel like in the last two fights, he’s been more aggressive and gotten out of his comfort zone. I feel like that goes down to training. Ryan is 25 years old and is still learning.

“Ryan Garcia, anyone can say whatever they want, but he’s a superstar. So there’s that. [Eddy] Reynoso isn’t an aggressive trainer, though. All of his fighters are aggressive counter-punchers. I think that’s what Ryan should have done.

“At the end of it, Ryan is a real champion. Tank was the better fighter that night. It was a good fight. Ryan got up and tried to continue fight like a man.

“I know it will happen one day. I’m excited for it,” said Rolly when asked if one day he’ll fight Ryan Garcia. “That’s what won him the fight,” said Rolly about Tank Davis’ footwork. “Ryan was the faster fighter and the harder hitter out of the two.

“Tank’s feet beat Ryan because Ryan doesn’t move at all. That was the biggest difference. There’s experience, but Tank has really good feet, and that’s what made the difference in the fight,” said Rolly.
