Gervonta Davis labels Ryan Garcia as a hypocrite

By Sam Volz: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis went to work on Thursday, letting the media know that he views his April 22nd opponent Ryan Garcia as a hypocrite, who he has zero respect for because he puts up a false front with the fans/media and he lied about their contract.

Gervonta (28-0, 26 KOs) noted that Ryan (23-0, 19 KOs) told his fans that it stated in the contract that he couldn’t drink water. It’s unclear what Ryan said.

The fact of the matter is that Tank Davis has two weight stipulations in the contract, one of which is the 136-lb catchweight, and the other is a 10-lb dehydration clause.

For that one, Ryan can’t weigh more than 146 lbs on the morning of the fight after he weighs in the day before on Friday. Ryan wanted the fight to take place at 140, as he fights at light welterweight.

To ensure that he got the fight, Ryan agreed to give Tank the four lbs that he wanted, which essentially makes the fight a lightweight contest because the limit for that division is 135.

“Me losing respect for him just was like recently. First of all, he lied about. Why would you even lie and put that out there that we put in the contract that you can’t drink no water or anything and double back,” said Gervonta Davis to Fighthype about Ryan Garcia.

“You said it with a serious face. People that are not boxing fans are going to believe it. Some people in the boxing world believed it. There are certain little things that he does,” said Gervonta.

Tank Davis showed that he lacks confidence

The reason that the fans believe what Ryan supposedly said about him not being able to drink water is because of Gervonta’s decision to put these two weight stipulations into the contract to gain an advantage for the fight:

  • 10-lb rehydration clause
  • 136-lb catchweight

If Tank Davis didn’t want to be criticized by fans and Ryan, he shouldn’t have shown weakness by putting those two weight stipulations into the contract because that looks like someone lacking confidence and needs a handicap to win.

Tank choosing to throw in a 10-lb rehydration clause on top of the 136-lb catchweight seems a bit punch, going way, way, way overboard in trying to ensure Ryan Garcia doesn’t gain the weight back. It would be interesting to know if the catchweight and dehydration clause was Gervonta’s idea or if his management thought it up. If it was Gervonta’s management, who specifically came up with that idea? Fans would like to know.

“I praise God and everything, but he drinks a lot, he gambles a lot. Yeah, for sure,” Gervonta said when asked if he thinks Ryan is a ‘hypocrite.’ “Even on All Access, he was on a jet gambling,” said Tank.
