Gervonta Davis: “I’m the Face of boxing already”

By Dan Ambrose: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says he’s already the “face of boxing” and has replaced Canelo Alvarez for that title. Tank Davis says Canelo is a good fighter but he’s  “going out the door” soon into retirement.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to view Tank Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) as the face of the sport because his resume is so thin. With Tank fighting non-elite level fighters his entire career, he doesn’t have the resume to be considered the face of boxing.

If Gervonta defeats Ryan Garcia on April 22nd, that would be a good start to him becoming the face of the sport, but he’s got to do a lot more than defeating Ryan to become the# 1 guy in boxing.

Tank needs wins over these fighters to earn the face of the sport:

  • Devin Haney
  • Ryan Garcia
  • Shakur Stevenson
  • Frank Martin
  • Vasily Lomachnko
  • Regis Prograis
  • Teofimo Lopez
  • Richardson Hitchins.

“It’s big. Canelo is one of the top fighters in the sport, and he’s a great fighter himself,” said Gervonta Davis to the media when told that Canelo Alvarez said that he’s his favorite fighter.

“Him calling me his favorite fighter is pretty touching. I think I’m the face of boxing already if we’re being real,” Gervonta continued. “I think Canelo is going out the door. Canelo is probably the only one, but he’s going out the door,” said Tank.

Tank’s best wins:

  • Leo Santa Cruz
  • Rolly Romermo
  • Leo Santa Cruz

There’s no chance that Tank will be viewed as the face of the sport because his resume is too thin. It will be interesting to see what Tank does if he defeats Ryan. Will he choose to fight Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, or Vasily Lomsachenko?

“Everytime I’m in there, I put in a dominant performance. I think going out there every time and putting on a great performance. I think that’s what makes me the star over everybody.

“People be winning, but first of all, they go twelve rounds. I’m not saying twelve rounds is bad, but it’s how they do it. They’re running, and they still think it’s amateur boxing. They [fans] want the whole package.

“They ain’t just pitty-pat. That’s not going to get you over the hump,” said Gervonta.
