WBC clears Conor Benn cites ingestion of eggs as rational for his positive tests

By Barry Holbrook: In a surprise ruling, the WBC has cleared Conor Benn of his two positive drug tests results, stating that the positive tests of clomifene could have resulted from his ingestion of eggs. The WBC will now add the 26-year-old Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) back to their rankings.

Of course, that doesn’t clear Benn from his ongoing ingestion by the British Boxing Board of Control, which is the one that really matters. If Benn can’t fight in the UK, he’s unlikely to draw fans to his fights if they’re staged outside of the country.

From the WBC

“The WBC found that: (1) there was no conclusive evidence that Mr. Benn engaged in intentional or knowing ingestion of Clomiphene; (2) there were no failures in the procedures related to sample collection, sample analysis, or violations of Mr. Benn’s B Sample rights that would justify questioning or invalidating the Adverse Finding; and (3) Mr. Benn’s documented and highly-elevated consumption of eggs during the times relevant to the sample collection, raised a reasonable explanation for the Adverse Finding.”

The real question is will the BBBofC clear Benn from their investigation because the WBC’s ruling is essentially meaningless without the British Boxing Board of Control clearing him.

Obviously, the WBC clearing Benn will allow his promoter Eddie Hearn to stand up and crow about the ruling, but ultimately, it has no basis for what’s really important. Benn needs to be cleared by the BBBofC if he wants to fight in the UK, and it’s highly questionable whether he will be.

Hearn could look silly later if the BBBofC finds Benn guilty and doesn’t license him to fight in the UK. If you’re Hearn, you’d probably be better off staying quiet until the BBBofC completes its investigation.

While some will argue that the WBC’s ruling means he’s innocent, the reality is he’s NOT going to be able to fight in the UK without the BBBofC clearing him, and there’s a good chance they won’t. Unfortunately, they might not buy into the egg ingestion excuse for Benn’s two positive tests.

Fans on social media today are ridiculing the WBC over their ruling to clear the Matchroom Boxing promoted Benn from their investigation, with some pointing out the recent comments from the president of the company he intends on giving Youtuber Jake Paul a ranking if he beats Tommy Fury this Sunday. In other words, fans on social media view the WBC as somewhat of a joke organization.
