Ryan Garcia Refuses To Stop The Cap

By Vince D’Writer: The urban use of the word “cap” or the phrase “stop the cap,” refers to an individual who is a liar. Ryan Garcia is a very talented boxer, but the 24-year-old lightweight contender is developing a bad habit of providing the boxing public with an excessive amount of cap.

Garcia continues to get boxing fans amped up for big fights, but instead of providing the big fight, he delivers bouts with lesser opponents. Garcia has verbally called out Manny Pacquiao and undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney, but his favorite target is Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

The rivalry between Garcia and Davis escalated in January 2021 when Garcia was a guest on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast. Elie Seckbach of EsNews called Gervonta Davis, and by way of video chat, Garcia and Davis had their first face to face interaction. Garcia took full advantage of the opportunity by exchanging words with Davis and making a bold prediction.

“Two rounds! Two rounds you’re going to sleep! Hey, it’s not going to hurt, I promise you it’s not going to hurt. Okay, two rounds, don’t worry, you can say all you want. I know you see me. Two rounds don’t worry. Hey, you’re going to need a step ladder to hit me!”

A few months after his appearance on the Hotboxin podcast, Garcia announced he was taking a break from boxing to deal with mental health issues. He made his returned to the ring in April 2022, and collected a unanimous decision win over Emmanuel Tagoe. During the post fight interview, Garcia was asked about Tank Davis, and he responded by saying he was through with the call outs because he didn’t want to lie to the fans.

Three months later, Garcia posted a knockout victory over Javier Fortuna, and immediately after the fight, he called out Gervonta Davis. “I will fight Tank next. If Tank wants it at 140, hey, hey, hey, I’m going to record all the negotiations so you guys don’t make no headlines saying I’m ducking. If he want it, let’s get it.”

Four weeks have elapsed since Ryan Garcia’s most recent public call out, and he went from a brief negotiation with Gervonta Davis, to his promoter going to Teofimo Lopez’s fight to do some scouting. Now it seems as though Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions have a new name on their radar.

After Dalton Smith defeated Sam O’maison on August 6 in Sheffield, England, IBO lightweight champion Maxi Hughes (25-5-2, 5 KOs), did an interview with Behind the Gloves to critique the fight, and he made an unexpected revelation. “Ryan Garcia has popped his head up again. Slid into my DM on Wednesday. He said, I want to come to the UK to fight in October, and I want to fight you Maxi.” Hughes forwarded the message to Eddie Hearn to see if they can start negotiating with Golden Boy.

A month ago Ryan Garcia went from saying he only wants to fight Tank Davis, to his team scouting Teofimo Lopez, and now we find out Garcia is recruiting an opponent for a potential bout in the UK. You can’t deny the fact that Garcia is an immense boxing talent, but he’s proven time and time again that his word is “Not” good as gold.
