By Chris Williams: Terence Crawford accuses Canelo Alvarez of shying away from fighting Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade during his career and shying away from fighting black fighters in general.
Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) states that Canelo (55-1-2, 37 KOs) has had the most problems during his career when fighting back fighters.
There’s no question that Floyd Mayweather Jr and Erislandy Lara both schooled Canelo in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
Canelo lost to Mayweather by a 12 round majority and then beat Lara by a highly questionable decision despite landing almost nothing. But Canelo sure did have problems with Lara, Mayweather, and Austin Trout.
“He’s shied away from Jermall Charlo and Andrade for a long time. When you look at Canelo’s career, it’s like he’s shied away from the black fighters.
“I think the black fighters give him the most problems,” said Crawford to the AK & Barak Show on DAZN.
Wow, Crawford is really unleashing his dogs of war on Canelo for some reason. I wonder what Canelo did to get Crawford going after him today.
Only Canelo knows why he hasn’t fought the unbeaten Jermall Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) and Demetrius Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs). I think Canelo should have fought those guys a long, long time ago.
Come on; the boxing world would respect Canelo a lot more if he were to devote all of 2021 to him fighting Jermall and Andrade rather than Billy Joe Saunders, Avni Yildirim, and Caleb Plant. It’s not even up for debate.
The fans worldwide would much prefer to see Canelo fight Jermall and Demetrius than him fighting Saunders, Yildirim, and Plant.
The fact that Canelo has chosen not to fight Jermall and Andrade, does that mean he’s avoiding them because they’re black, or is it because they’re too good?
That’s the magic question. To be sure, we can speculate as to why Canelo opted not to fight Charlo and Andrade, but we’ll never know for certain.
Obviously, though, Canelo has decided to go in the path of least resistance by taking on Saunders and Plant, both of which are viewed by some as paper champions at 168.
There’s no excuse at all whatsoever for Canelo choosing to fight Yildirim last February, as he didn’t have to take that fight. As the WBC Franchise champion, Canelo could have told Yildirim to kick rocks.
Canelo could have bypassed that fight with his Franchise, and that’s what the World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman said.
He doesn’t understand why Canelo didn’t use the Franchise tag to steer around Yildirim. The only thing you can think of is Canelo wanted an easy fight, so he chose to fight him.
Chris Williams had Canelo losing to all three of those fighters, and his record should be 53-3 instead of 55-1.
If you want to throw in Canelo’s controversial decision wins Gennady Golovkin and Miguel Cotto, Canelo’s record should be 50-6, which isn’t a bad record.
But it’s not nearly as nice as Canelo’s fluffed up 55-1 record with his controversial fights against GGG, Cotto, Lara, and Trout.
