By Dan Ambrose: In a battle of bantamweight fighters, 28-year-old Karim Guerfi (22-3, 6 KOs) defeated #12 WBC #13 WBA Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr. (25-2-2, 15 KOs) in defeating him by a 10 round unanimous decision on Tuesday night on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox Sports 1 from the Austin City Music Hall in Austin, Texas.
The final judges’ scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94, all for Guerfi from France. Gonzalez Jr. won the 1st and 10th rounds. That’s all I saw from him tonight. He was out-boxed from the 2nd through the 9th rounds.
Gonzalez Jr, 22, dropped Guerfi with a left to the body in the 1st round. It looked like the fight was going to end right then and there, but somehow Guerfi was able to beat the count and make it out of the round by moving in circles. Unfortunately for Gonzalez Jr, he was unable to duplicate that fete in the following rounds. He appeared to hurt his right hand early in the fight, and was forced to fight using mostly his left hand.
Gonzalez Jr. wasn’t able to work his way to the inside to pound Guerfi with his left hooks. That’s a problem that Gonzalez Jr. has in his fighting style. A good inside fighter would have smothered Guerfi and got in close to pound him with body shots until he dropped for a knockout, but Gonzalez showed that he could only throw body shots from medium distance, and this made it easy for Guerfi to nail him with fast combinations each time he tried to get in position to land his left hook, which was pretty much his only weapon in the fight.
We weren’t looking at future world champions tonight with the Guerfi and Gonzalez Jr. fight. These are mediocre guys that aren’t in the same class as the top fighters in the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions. It’s too bad Premier Boxing Champions didn’t have future world champion caliber contenders on their card tonight because it would have been more interesting than watching two no-hopers battling it out.
For Gonzalez Jr, this was his second straight defeat and his third loss in his last six fights. He’s a decent fringe level guy, but he’s heading for journeyman status quickly, and I can’t see him staying in the top 15 for long after tonight’s loss.

In other boxing results on the card, unbeaten super featherweight Mario Barrios (13-0, 7 KOs) defeated Enrique Tinoco (15-3-2, 11 KOs) by an eight round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 78-74, 78-74 and 78-74.

Featherweight Miguel Flores (18-0, 9 KOs) beat Alredo Tetteh (23-5-1, 20 KOs) by as 2nd round knockout. Flores dropped Tetteh in the 2nd round. The fight was then halted at 1:10 of the round.
