Hearn to hold talks with Amir Khan this week

khan101By AC Cooper: Matchroom Promoter Eddie Hearn plans to hold talks with Amir Khan this week about a possible fight with Kell Brook in November.

Both fighters were present for the Scott Quigg/Kiko Martinez fight in Manchester on Saturday evening, although the fighters did not come face to face. Kell Brook could be seen in the crowd next to Hearn whilst Khan was in a VIP box with friends.

Both fighters have been very vocal towards each other in recent months. Khan has distanced himself from the fight, still intent on chasing a big money fight with Floyd Mayweather. But the American superstar is expected to overlook the Bolton man again, with reports suggesting he will face Andre Berto.

Kell Brook has been pushing for the Khan fight, stating last week that he could stop Khan inside of 5 or 6 rounds and Hearn hopes this latest snub could entice Khan into an alternate big money fight later in the year.

Asked whether he spoke to Khan at the weekend, Hearn told Sky Sports: “No I didn’t, he was upstairs in a box, but I did speak to him via text.

“I’ve said that I would like to grab an hour with him this week to talk about the fight. It looks like September 12 is not happening for Amir Khan against Floyd Mayweather, so therefore he won’t be able to fight (him) until May at the earliest.

“He must be looking at a big fight, November time. Who else other than Kell Brook can give him what he needs and give him the numbers that he needs?”

I would suggest that despite Khan’s apparent excuses they both need this fight. Kell Brook has drawn criticism for his last 2 opponents, although you have to bear in mind that he was attacked and stabbed in the leg whilst on holiday last year. Jo Jo Dan was his mandatory, but picking Gavin as his next opponent had many a fight fan scratching their heads.

Kell Brook only has one big name on his CV, that being beating Shawn Porter for the title last year. A fight against Brandon Rios was muted but failed to materialise. The Welterweight division is due to lose FMJ and Manny Pacquiao over the next 12 to 18 months and as such their is a real opportunity for the Kell Brook’s, Amir Khan’s and Keith Thurman’s of this world to grab the bull by the horns and be the divisions next star. However, for this to happen fights just like Brook/Khan need to take place.

Khan is also guilty of fighting was might be considered ‘soft’ opposition. His wins at Welterweight were against 2 blown up light-welterweights in Alexander and Diaz (this fight was at a 143 catch weight) and a well past his best Luis Collazo.

I for one as a British boxing fan really hope that this fight happens and could easily sell out Wembley as Carl Froch & George Groves had done previously.

Who do I think would win? Whilst Khan’s footwork and hand speed are superior to Brook’s, Kell is the bigger puncher and a good counter puncher. The heart and the head say nothing but a Kell Brook KO.
